I'm going TLJ simply for the emergence of Kylo as a worthy villain.

The casino city was just horrible as was the smuggler "interlude" in TFA so they both have their parts that drag the movies down.

Here's the thing, if it were planned that way, and one would think they'd have this trilogy mapped out, fine, but it wasn't:

Alissa Wilkinson

What goes into those decisions when you’re making a Star Wars movie, where so much of the universe is already set up going in?

Rian Johnson

Well, it is, but it isn’t. We were working off of The Force Awakens, but it’s not like there was a blueprint for what happens after The Force Awakens. There wasn’t at all. It was literally just me reading the script, and then thinking, what happens next?

Correct - he's saying what comes AFTER TFA - You're saying (well if you agree with the quote I replied too) that TFA is irrelevant and that's not the case at all.

TFA builds up Snoke as this big bad villain as even Han Solo mentions him to his son, but now you go back and watch it and he is almost a punchline for dying like a bitch. Every Rey scene where it is implied there is something big about her regarding her heritage (the Lightsaber calling her, Luke's music, etc) was just a big fake out. And of course then ending of TFA is a Spaceballs Parody as Luke just chucks the saber in the next movie.
100% disagree. Finding Luke has profound consequences for the galaxy in TLJ. Snoke was just an emperor stand-in in TFA (he’s big in the sense that he’s a giant hologram but otherwise he’s mostly unimportant). Han only mentions Snoke to Kylo because Snoke is the one who turned Kylo and who Kylo is loyal to. And he doesn’t die “like a bitch”. It’s not like he slips on a banan peel and lands face first onto a rake or something. He doesn’t die cleaning a lightsaber and having it accidentally go off in his face.

Rey’s heritage is the Force. Snoke even says as Kylo got more powerful, he knew the light side would respond in kind. She is that response. The details of her parentage are and always have been meaningless. Anyone can be strong with the Force.

Re: The Force Awakens (2015) or The Last Jedi (2017)?

I don’t think wanting to find Luke in the first film to help the Resistance only to have Rey discover that he’s not exactly willing like she wants him to be is a bad thing. People aren’t always who you think they’re going to be. In the end he did assist just not in the way we thought he might. I mean really looking back now the trailers were pretty transparent and things didn’t go the way we thought to sum up what Luke says. I still think the first film works fine. Rey still starts her journey to becoming what she’s ultimately going to become in it. Same can be said for Kylo. There are bumps along the way and unexpected surprises but that’s life (plus I’m still not convinced about Kylo’s reveal of where Rey comes from).

I think it’s funny how people complain when something is too by the books or predictable but someone takes it in a different direction and it still gets shit. People just aren’t satisfied no matter what you do.

Last Jedi easily. FA was a A New Hope retread. I like Rogue One better than LJ and FA, though.

in TFA, Kylo felt like an emo loser akin to dudes who yell at women in internet comment sections on news/blog websites. In TLJ, he's actually a good villain.

I love TFA, derivative and all, but TLJ blows it out of the water IMO.

Other than the stupid "I am one with the force, the force is with me" kung-fu bullshit, I liked Rogue One.
Didn't like TFA very much.
Hated TLJ.

TFA edges it for me just because of the nostalgia factor but I think TLJ was a far more interesting movie.

I need a second viewing of Last Jedi before I make a final verdict. The more I think about it, the more obvious some of its problems appear. Or maybe some of the Internet geek rage/nitpicking is wearing off on me.

I will never this understand this argument. If something is developed well, I could care less if it's original or taken right from another story.

I will give you an example of Rocky 5 and Rocky Balboa. Rocky is essentially the same character in both movies, sort of broken down (Rocky 5 he loses all his money and has to go back to the middle class) where (Rocky Balboa he is more melancholy after Adrian died).

Rocky 5 is a terrible movie because it is executed so badly, as the relationship between he and his son is so badly done (ironically that is his son.) Paulie is a caricature in that movie, as Adrian is the only decent character.

Rocky Balboa is executed much better as the director really gets to the character as to why he is like that at that age, along with Paulie, and the relationship with his son (a new actor) is very well done.

I have no problem with Hermit Luke, but it is so undeveloped that the scenes with Rey are just meh, as that is the best word to describe it. Rey and Luke are utterly wasted in this movie, as Luke feels more like Rocky 5 and that's whats so disappointing.

Besides not finding the story interesting:

- No epic lightsaber duel? C'mon this is Star Wars!
- A lot of the humor felt out of place in a SW movie, like the prank call trolling at the beginning, the Hardware Wars reference, and I'm not positive but I would swear there was a your momma joke in the movie at one point.
- The reveal of Leia being a Kryptonian was handled very poorly.
- The battle that wasn't between Kylo and Luke

It's different!

Now rinse and repeat for every defense of the movie.

Oh, and I'll have to agree with the folks in this thread who said Rogue One was the superior movie.

Both are 5/5 but I give the edge to TFA because old Han Solo was the best character out of both films.

The force awakens. I can still think of things I liked about TFA. I saw LJ yesterday and can barely remember anything that I enjoyed.

I'll say I'm amazed anyone thinks Rogue One is even comparable to TFA or TLJ. The first 2/3 of that film is terrible, and it's only redeemed by an action-packed third act and the Vader scene. Every character is woefully realized.

Agreed, it’s one of the worst SW films IMO.
