Rush Hour 4 -- S: Chan, Tucker -- News and Rumors

Seems like there wasn't an existing thread for this. Anyways, some news came out this past week.

http://deadline.com/2017/10/jackie-c...er-1202183308/

“Which one of y’all kicked me?” Hard to believe it’s been nearly 20 years since LAPD Detective James Carter took a boot to the face from that unknown assailant in Rush Hour. Now it sounds like Chris Tucker’s manic character might be reunited with Jackie Chan’s Hong Kong Detective Inspector Lee for a fourth adventure in the East-beats-West series.

Chan gave a radio interview Thursday in which he teased that a Rush Hour 4 in very much in the works — the first misadventure in the series since 2007. “For the last seven years, we’ve been turning down the script, turning down the script,” Chan told L.A. outlet Power 106’s The Cruz Show. “Yesterday, we just agreed.”

This is from another interview Jackie did 4 years ago about it:

https://sg.style.yahoo.com/news/jack...042000949.html

Q: What about "Rush Hour 4"?
We just finished meeting last month in L.A. with Chris Tucker and two writers. The first draft, I don't really like it. It's just boring. Nothing is exciting anymore. I know Warner Bros. really wanted to do "Rush Hour 4". Both Chris Tucker and I agreed to do another one, but we need to see the script first. So far, it's Jackie goes to Hong Kong, no, Jackie goes to America... Chris Tucker goes to Hong Kong. Then we go to Paris. What's next? It's difficult.

Oops...the 1st interview was new. I'll clarify that it was the last news beforehand.

Meh. It's like 15 years too late. I refuse to watch 3, so not really excited for it. Chan should continue to film more serious action flicks like The Foreigner.

I wonder who they will get to direct since it most certainly won't be Ratner.

Probably someone who's experienced with comedy-action movies.

Jackie could direct. He has a few movies on his resume, but I doubt he would direct this. It would be a huge project for him to handle.

Re: Rush Hour 4 -- S: Chan, Tucker -- News and Rumors

Like other men accused of sexual misconduct, Brett Ratner appears to be plotting a comeback — in this case just six months after allegations against him first surfaced. His hoped-for vehicle: The Rush Hour franchise.

Sources say that Ratner has been telling associates that he will direct the fourth film in the series — a boast that has put Warner Bros. and its New Line division in an awkward position.

Studio sources emphatically say Ratner will not direct a fourth Rush Hour film if there is one. "Brett has been walking around town telling people he's going to direct a Rush Hour movie because it's his only way back in," says one high-level exec. "He's trying to make believe he's employable." Putting together a movie with him would be 'a suicide mission,'" this person says.

But it seems that, given their long and very close professional and social relationships with the director, neither Warners chairman and CEO Kevin Tsujihara nor film studio chairman Toby Emmerich is prepared to relay that to Ratner. Warners declined to comment or to rule out Ratner as a possible director for the project. Ratner’s attorney Marty Singer also declined to comment.

Rush Hour producer Arthur Sarkissian says he has long been pressing to make a fourth film in the $850 million-grossing franchise and believes that with the right script, stars Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker will be on board. Ratner, 49, has directed all three Rush Hour movies, starting with the original in 1998. The most recent film, 2007’s Rush Hour 3, grossed $258 million worldwide.

Impatient to launch a fourth movie, Sarkissian says he asked the studio to put the project in turnaround and had an agreement in place in 2014 that was never signed. At that point, Emmerich suggested that a television series was a better idea than another film. Warners put together a show — without Chan or Tucker — that ran for one season on CBS.

Subsequently, the studio had decided that another movie was worth making. But then the Harvey Weinstein allegations surfaced and the #MeToo movement engulfed Ratner, who was accused of sexual misconduct by several women, including actresses Olivia Munn and Natasha Henstridge. (Ratner has denied the claims and is suing a woman for defamation after she wrote on Facebook that he raped her.)

“The scandal broke and they put a pin in it,” Sarkissian says, referring to Warner Bros. executives and Rush Hour 4. “I went back [to them] and said, 'I want to do my movie.' They said, 'Fair enough.'”

Sarkissian says Warners has put the film in turnaround — freeing him to commission a script with outside financing. Should he succeed in assembling the elements, the studio has a chance to opt back into the project. Sarkissian confirms that Black-ish creator Kenya Barris was approached to write a script. But Barris is said to have wanted no part in the project if Ratner was involved, and he passed regardless due to a busy schedule.

Sarkissian says Ratner is "not attached” to the project at this point and he doesn’t know why Ratner would tell people that he is directing Rush Hour 4. Asked whether there is any chance Ratner might direct the fourth film, Sarkissian has nothing definitive to say. “All I’m interested in is to make the best movie possible,” he says.

Sources confirm that Ratner has been checking in with Warners every month or two to ask about the progress of the project. They maintain that Ratner will not be directing another Rush Hour should the project come to fruition, but a source says “no one is willing to tell Brett he’s not the director of the picture.”

Another high-level source says billionaire Len Blavatnik, Ratner’s former partner in his Ratpac Entertainment production-finance company, had told the embattled filmmaker that he would continue to pay him but asked Ratner to keep a low profile. (Blavatnik’s Access Industries did not respond to a request for comment.) That doesn’t seem to be in Ratner’s DNA. In January, Page Six ran a story headlined, “Scandal Plagued Brett Ratner Living it up in Miami.” The gossip column reported that Ratner was desporting himself at Blavatnik’s trendy Miami hotel, Faena. A source says Blavatnik wasn’t pleased by the attention that Ratner was drawing to himself. Ratner also was spotted with several women in Cannes during the film festival last month wearing a Warner Bros. hat.

Singer, referring to the Miami hotel in the Page Six story, said Ratner “wasn’t partying with Avi Lerner and Donny Deutsch — he is going to dinner with friends. He has a right to have a life and go to private dinners. Brett has no reason to hide.”

IF they ever do this, Peter Berg would be a solid replacement instead of Ratner.

I don't understand that statement. At all. So, what is with the Instagram pic with Chris Tucker then? Why hold up the four fingers? Kind of on him for that kind of news going around... (also, I haven't read anything on Karate Kid 2).

Re: Rush Hour 4 -- S: Chan, Tucker -- News and Rumors

Jackie Chan revealed he is meeting with the director of Rush Hour 4 in Saudi Arabia this evening, to discuss the script for the latest instalment of the action comedy franchise.

Speaking at an in-conversation event at Red Sea International Film Festival (RSIFF) in Saudi Arabia, Chan said, “We’re talking about part four right now! But the script isn’t right.”

“I will see the director tonight and we will be talking about it.”

Chan did not confirm who the director will be.

A fourth Rush Hour film has been rumoured for many years, but never confirmed; Chan’s announcement is the most concrete suggestion yet that the series will return. He had previously said in 2017 that he had agreed on a script; and then in 2019 posed with co-star Chris Tucker holding up four fingers.

The first three films in the Warner Bros franchise, released in 1998, 2001 and 2007, were all directed by Brett Ratner, who has not directed a film since allegations of sexual assault were made against him in the #MeToo movement in 2017.

Chan also spoke about another upcoming feature, Never Let The Rain Stop, that will shoot in both Saudi Arabia and Morocco. Again not revealing their identity, he said he spoke to the director two months ago, who asked him to talk to the Saudi Film Commission to help get the project off the ground.

Describing the film as “a challenge’, Chan said his character is a doctor who is “somehow helping somebody”.

He also revealed that he will be starring in a Chinese adaptation of a film called The General; he did not confirm which film titled The General this would be, but said he would be playing the character of a “wise man”.

Less action, more romance

In a 40-minute session that was regularly interrupted by excited fans, the martial arts icon said he plans to “make less action movies, more love stories” in the future. He also recalled his early days in the industry, including working with fellow Asian cinema star Bruce Lee when the latter was an established name. “What Bruce Lee learnt, I knew – I’d been doing those techniques every day,” said Chan. “Bruce Lee is the one who put those kind of things on screen.”

He remembered hitting Lee during an action scene when Chan was one of “about 100” stuntmen, and continuing with the scene – “as a stunt guy, you can get hit every day.” He looked up to see Lee clutching his mouth. “I pretended to be hurt too,” said Chan. “The whole day and night, wherever he went he turned around [and I was there] – I wanted him to hit me again.”

Chan revealed he almost turned down the Rush Hour franchise, as he was tired of being typecast in US films as a police officer. His manager persuaded him by saying the character was “not American-born Chinese, you’re Hong Kong police going to America. You don’t even speak good English.”

After the first film was released, he received a call from Ratner and Tucker, who said “Dude! We’re a huge success, we’re $70m in the first weekend!”

Chan also remembered a confusion over his 2016 honorary Oscar. “[The Academy] called me very secretly – we were on-set filming,” said Chan, who added that the line was so poor that he thought they were calling to ask him to present at the Oscars. “24 hours later, everybody goes ‘congratulations!’ Me?! OK!”

He also said that then-Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs told him he was the only person in the history of the Oscars to have received as many as 50 votes from the nominating committee for the honorary prizes.

A frenetic session at Jeddah’s VOX Cinemas also included Chan mimicking his martial arts moves several times on-stage, and responding to several requests that he sing by serenading the audience with a few bars of Elvis Presley’s ‘Can’t Help Falling In Love’.

What a strange article . . . whole lotta nothing coated in the same old Chan PR schtick. Surprised he didn't haul out the old "Bruce punch high so I punch low" routine, or whatever it was. And "more love stories"? At 68 years old? Ok . . .

They should just do a combined Bad Boys/Rush Hour movie at this point. It would be huge.
