A thrilling and inspiring true story begins on the eve of World War II as, within days of becoming Prime Minister of Great Britain, Winston Churchill (Academy Award nominee Gary Oldman) must face one of his most turbulent and defining trials: exploring a negotiated peace treaty with Nazi Germany, or standing firm to fight for the ideals, liberty and freedom of a nation. As the unstoppable Nazi forces roll across Western Europe and the threat of invasion is imminent, and with an unprepared public, a skeptical King, and his own party plotting against him, Churchill must withstand his darkest hour, rally a nation, and attempt to change the course of world history. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4555426 |

Gary Oldman is the frontrunner so far for the Best Actor Oscar. This looks like a lock for the Best Makeup Oscar as well.

I thought Oldman was great in this. Makeup was great. I'm not much of a historian on Churchill, but it was an interesting story especially after seeing Dunkirk last summer to see how it connected what was going on in London at the time.

That was Oldman? Just got home from this and had no idea. Wow.

Saw this today at a matinee. Just outstanding performance by Oldman. Really enjoyed the whole film.

BIG fan of Oldman here, but I'll pass on this one.
In the trailers, I distinctly hear the voice of Gary Oldman clear as a bell, and that ruins the illusion IMO. |

Oldman was fantastic in this, unsurprisingly. Everything else about this movie was mediocre at best, and that made up scene in the tube was a fucking embarrassment.

The film played it pretty straight-forward & safe but Oldman's performance was fantastic.

I enjoyed the movie. Good companion piece to Dunkirk. It was definitely an older crowd. They seemed to enjoy the movie too.

One hell of a performance from Oldman. Already knew he was a great actor but this was award-worthy. And yes, this would make for a good double feature with Dunkirk.

This film was just incredible. A lot of times with these type of performances (i.e. heavy makeup/out of character) the actor does a great job but you still know who the actor is. With Oldman's performance he really did disappear and it was like watching Churchill on the screen. It might be because WWII is a fascinating subject matter but the film just fired on all cylinders for me. I could have watched and would have loved to have seen Churchill throughout the war. It was very moving to see him as a human being just doing the best that he can under the enormous gravity of the situation.

Finally got to this one and Oldman was terrific, not sure if it was his take on those Churchill mannerisms and ticks, but they did grate on your after awhile. Pretty solid story and an interesting companion piece to Dunkirk. Well worth the watch.
