Annabelle (2014, Leonetti) - The Conjuring spinoff
New Line will begin production of “Annabelle,” its spinoff of “The Conjuring,” on Jan. 27 in Los Angeles.
Peter Safran and “The Conjuring” director James Wan are producing.
Variety first reported in July that New Line was developing a sequel to “The Conjuring,” a tale of demonic possession set in a Rhode Island farmhouse. The film was a massive success with a worldwide gross of $318 million on a $20 million budget.
Annabelle Wallis (“Peaky Blinders”) and Ward Horton will star in “Annabelle” with John Leonetti, the cinematographer on “The Conjuring,” directing from a script by Gary Dauberman.
Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, who starred in “The Conjuring” as paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, are not in the spinoff. “The Conjuring” included a haunted doll named Annabelle as part of the Warrens’ collection of demonic objects.

The Conjuring was a decent film (although I didn't find it all that frightening personally) and I'm intersted in the sequel to it. Not really sure there's a need for three spinoff type films for it though.

Sounds like these will be related to the original in name and the thinnest of connections. Which could be a good thing.

The Conjuring made me pee a little. Besides seeing Amityville Horror at the ripe / appropriate age of 9, this movie scared me more than any other horror film. I'm not sure a film based on the doll will do the trick though.

I really enjoyed the flick and think Annabelle is the creepiest prop I've seen in a movie, but wish they'd just stuck with follow-ups featuring Wilson & Farmiga as the Warrens. Whatever they come up with, it's not going to top the 5-10 minutes of Annabelle in the beginning of The Conjuring.

I can see them trying to make a series thinly connected to The Conjuring where each new installment tells the story of a haunted artifact from the Warren's collection.

I'm down for it. The PR release threw me off at first, because the spin-off sequel is "Annabelle," which comes out in the Fall, right? Then the actual sequel: Conjuring 2, comes out the following fall of 2015. Maybe they can Leigh Wannell to make his directorial debut on part 2?

Looks decently creepy. I wonder how much of the story will be based on the Warrens' actual accounts or if the story just places the haunted doll in a completely made up story.

I liked The Conjuring. It did end with the doll. I thought that last shot was a little odd. I thought it was more about the atmosphere, than trying to say something about a sequel.

I'm surprised directing Mortal Kombat: Annihilation didn't end Leonetti's career helming movies.

To tell you the truth, save for the terrible special effects and the drop dead atrocious dialog, I've always felt that Annihilation was well shot and had some other good technical merits. Provided he's given a good script, Leonetti could make this work.

They are really pushing this on TV at the moment. I liked the short back story to the doll in the Conjuring, but don't think this movie looks like it captures anything of the spookiness those 5 minutes held. I read today that the movie also begins by basically saying that if the movie does well enough financially they they already have an idea for a sequel. That sounds all kinds of weird. The trailers really make it look bland and not scary at all.

I'm on vacation and the friend I'm staying with insisted on seeing this.
There's an interesting plot point involving Charlie Manson and cults that could've made this film fun and interesting. However, let me just state this film is anything but fun or interesting.

The Conjuring was sooooo overrated and not scary in the least (the PT PS4 demo was scarier than anything in this movie)
happy to see this fail
