Joker (2019, D: Todd Phillips) -- S: Joaquin Phoenix

EXCLUSIVE: Warner Bros and DC are in the early stages of another Batman Universe spinoff movie, this one telling the origin story of the signature villain The Joker. The studio has set The Hangover‘s Todd Phillips to co-write a script with 8 Mile scribe Scott Silver. Phillips will direct the movie, and Martin Scorsese will produce it with Phillips. This will be the first film under a new banner that has yet to be named in which WB can expand the canon of DC properties and create unique storylines with different actors playing the iconic characters.

Untitled JOKER Origin Movie. Dir: T Phillips Prod: Scorsese; no Leto

This is no laughing matter: Warners has tapped The Hangover filmmaker Todd Phillips to co-write and possibly direct an origin movie of classic Batman villain The Joker.
Phillips will co-write the script with Scott Silver, the writer of the Eminem movie 8 Mile as well as The Fighter, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

The project is intended to be part of a still developing label for Warners’ DC Entertainment properties that will include projects that could stand apart from the big massive tentpoles that are tied to each other in a shared universe way.

For example, the Joker is already part of the Suicide Squad movie franchise and is played by Jared Leto. The Joker movie in development, under the plan, would feature another actor and be made under another budget category. At this stage, the story is set in Gotham City in the early 1980s.

The new label would give Warners leeway to make more DC-oriented projects, unconstrained by continuity.

One report stated that filmmaker Martin Scorsese was producing the project but sources tell THR that his involvement is far from assured.

Phillips, known for writing and directing the Hangover franchise for the studio. It is one of the most successful comedy franchises of all time and helped launch the careers of actor Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms and Zach Galifianakis. He last wrote, directed and produced War Dogs, starring Miles Teller and Jonah Hill. Along with producing most of his own work, he also produced Bradley Cooper’s upcoming film A Star Is Born. He’s repped by CAA.

I'd be more interested if this was Scorsese directing and Phillips producing

If they had Nolan direct a CGI Ledger I would go straight to IMDB and rate it 10/10.

Garbage. Joker doesn't have an origin. That's what makes him interesting.

Dollars to doughnuts DC makes Joker's mom or wife named Martha.

Yup. No real origin. I thought when they gave Wolverine an actual origin it just made him less interesting. Same for the Phantom Stranger.

It'd be an interesting concept to have an origin story without a typical origin. More like 'his first time out'. Unfortunately, I don't have faith that DC will take that kind of risk.

I expect an origin story, where he's growing up, gets bullied, and develops The Joker as a response. Or some shit like that.

(Okay, quit twisting my arm ... I'll write it for you WB.)

No Leto and Scorsese I'm down for. Why make it something that doesn't tie in with the rest of the DCEU though? That just makes it kind of confusing as to what they're doing. Also I tend to agree that Joker shouldn't have an origin. Unless they just retell the origin with him as the Red Hood falling into the chemicals and becoming The Joker. We've been there sort of though with Nicholson but that's obviously been a long time.

If Scorsese is producing they should get Joe Pesci for the Joker.

So now Warner Bros. is 20th Century Foxing the DC films?

I'm not sure I get all the negativity. I mean "no Leto" is already a step in the right direction.

Are you saying Pesci is some kind of clown?

It is, but it kind of makes me think: "what the fuck?" when they talk about it maybe not tying into the continuity of the DCEU. If they're building that why would they do something separate like this? Clearly Batman is part of the DCEU and The Joker comes with that. It's just weird that they'd want to do it separately. It's like Sony doing their Spiderverse films without Spider-Man only this is more boneheaded as WB owns all the DC characters outright.

This is so unecessary and silly. DC just doesn't make good movies, save WW. They don't have it like Marvel. They just lay eggs...

Didn't The Killing Joke tell the Joker origin story for the most part? Or was that graphic novel/DC animated film just it's own thing?

That's basically the most accepted and popular Joker origin but the character really has never had a definitive origin. It's always been a mystery as to who he is and why he is the way he is. Joker himself has even alluded to the fact that even he isn't sure what happened to him so that's how screwed up he is. I'm not caught up but I do believe the latest run in the comics (the DC Rebirth books) were doing something with The Joker too that might be explaining more of his backstory.

So that's why the Joker went bad - too much ridicule about him shining shoes.

An out-of-continuity, standalone movie about a DC villain? What could go wrong?

Yeah, no shit.

They've only released four DCEU movies, and they're already talking about balkanizing their universe with "elseworlds" stuff?

What is this, the twentieth one they've announced that's in development?

Leto is doing Suicide Squad 2 and Gotham City Sirens so like it or not, he'll still be around

It seems super weird that there's multiple live action film continuities.

Really? I haven't paid that much attention, but I had the impression he was really upset about the way his part was edited in Suicide Squad. Surprised he's doing more.

Yeah, I haven't heard anything about Leto's return confirmed yet. Also isn't the Gotham City Sirens film up in the air at the moment since Ayer's departure?
