So what is this exactly? A complete reboot? An obviously different toned sequel? I don’t get it. I didn’t hate first and could’ve seen more, but this jokey (while some made me chuckle) movie seems odd to me in some way since same title and played by same actor.

It's the 5th film in the series, three of which were named Shaft.

I tried explaining this to my wife. There's the original Shaft with Richard Roundtree, that film has two proper sequels. Then they did a remake/reboot called Shaft starring Sam Jackson in which Richard Roundtree shows up as his original Shaft, who it new Shaft's uncle. Now they are making a sequel to the remake/reboot of Shaft, called Shaft, where Sam Jackson plays the same reboot Shaft as before, and Richard Roundtree plays his original Shaft, but now he's the father of reboot Shaft.

I’m not sure if they are actually changing Roundtree’s role. It would be dumb if he isn’t uncle to reboot Shaft anymore. I know Shaft 3 says “grandpa”, but it could be a nickname or a trailer edit where he calls him grandpa as an insult in the context of the scene or some other variation of it being plugged into the trailer.

I don’t know why they let Tim Story do this.

I'm hearing it sucks because of anachronistic, offensive jokes and an air of hyper masculinity... so count me in!

I've seen plenty of advertising for it (literally every commercial break), still think it won't do amazingly well tho.
Which wound up being BS, this is now looking at $8m.

Having just seen the original and it's sequel this week, I don't think that Samuel Jackson has the right brand of swagger for Shaft.

Just finished watching this. I thought it was very entertaining and quite hilarious. Not a great movie, but fun. Sam Jackson had some really funny lines and I enjoyed the comradery he had with Jesse Usher. I laughed quite a bit during this movie.
But, in actuality this felt like a movie that should have been made 15-16 years ago. I think it just came out at the wrong time and now no one really cares for the Shaft story. It's also kind of a cheesy 90's style detective action comedy. Also, this IMO is not a big summer movie. I think this should have been released in the Fall or even the Spring. I think WB knew this wasn't going to make money and that's why they are essentially dumping it here and selling it's international rights to Netflix. Highly doubtful this would have made any money overseas.
And yes this is in continuity with 2000 Shaft. They showed some scenes in the opening credits of Sam Jackson with that movie. And they also explained in a quick bit that Richard Roundtree was pretending to be John Shaft's Uncle when he's actually his Dad.
But, I had a good time watching this. I'll give it a B.

Are the original three movies on bluray?

I saw this a few weeks back. I didn't hate it, it was funny at times, but it was like Jackson was playing a caricature of Shaft. This should not have been a typical Tim Story Ride Along type movie.

It was more of a comedy but I liked it.
Maybe it is not worth it to see it in the theater but as a rental it works fine.

I liked this one more then Jacksons first, not as much as the Roundtree movie trilogy but tons more then the Rountree tv movies but over all the series is staying strong as a whole

I had this on over the weekend while I assembled some furniture. It fit the bill perfectly for the situation.
