Sunset Boulevard Movie Musical (D: Ashford) -- S: Glenn Close
Paramount Pictures is pursuing a big-screen adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Sunset Boulevard” to star Tony winner Glenn Close — who just ended a revival run of the musical on Broadway in June.
Close is in advanced talks to play the part she originated on the stage in 1994, and the studio is actively searching for a director and a leading man to star opposite her, two individuals familiar with the project told TheWrap.
TV mogul Ryan Murphy was approached to helm, both insiders said, but no deals are in place. Production is eyeing a January start. Representatives for Close and the studio did not immediately respond to requests for comment. A representative for Murphy flatly denied his involvement at this time.

Not a bad idea. Saw the original run in L.A. and liked it quite a bit. It was playing right next door to my Times Square hotel in June but I passed on seeing it again. Heard Glenn was still great though.
Now, would you shoot it in B&W?

I've been hoping for this for years. But at this point I wonder if Glenn Close is, like Norma herself, too old for the part. The character is supposed to be 50, but Close is 70 now.

As long as she can still sing (and word is she can), I think she would be fine.

SB isn't my favorite show, but I like it--lots of good music.
Not sure whether Close is too old, but I had the same thought when I heard she was returning to the role like 20 years later. Kinda meta.
I saw Elaine Paige in the role in London but not Close or LuPone.

It would have to be a huge gut-punch to be told you're too old to play Norma Desmond.

Right, having the character expect to return to stardom at 70 would be a bit of a stretch, but as long as she doesn't look old and crinkled, I expect Close will be fine.

Paramount Pictures, the studio behind Wilder’s movie, have contracted British writer Tom MacRae, who wrote the book and lyrics for acclaimed show Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, to write the script for the new film. MacRae has been told to make old Hollywood a big character in the picture, which Rob Ashford will direct and choreograph.

I hope its better than the "The Producers" movie musical. The first film I ever walked out on. This seems completely unnecessary and a little too incestuous. Unless it gets glowing reviews, I'll probably pass.

Maybe, but of course it didn't get Gloria Swanson one. And if it comes out this year, Hollywood's other perpetual bridesmaid Annette Bening will also be a front runner for playing Sen. Dianne Feinstein in The Report, apparently.

If she wins, and if we exclude music biopics, she would be the first Lead Actor to win an Oscar for a musical since Liza in 1972 I think

A Sunset Blvd movie has been in the works for many, many years. Glenn's done it three times on stage already AFAIK. This deal wasn't just closed last week in the wake of the Oscars. These things take a long time to come to fruition.

Literally not a single word about this movie anywhere on the internet in 10 months since they hired a director. Wonder if it's dead.
