Early reviews: 74% @ https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/the...a_sacred_deer/

What's worth noting is it has a 8.0 out of 10 average despite a 74% score.

After being 3 for 3 with Doogtooth, Alps and The Lobster, Lanthimos means I'm in.

This movie looks great.

I hated The Lobster though.

Have you seen the director's other 2 films, Dogtooth & Alps?
If you have, what did you think of them?

I found The Lobster with its Bu˝uelian themes to be very similar to his first two films.
The only difference of course is that it was in English, while the other two are in Greek.

I tolerated Lobster but Dogtooth was unwatchable for me. Never heard of the other one.

Don't know if you'll like Alps which is just as twisted as Lanthimos' other films. It's about a group that runs a business where they are hired by grieving people to impersonate their recently deceased loved ones.

re: The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017, Lanthimos) S: Farrell, Kidman, Keoghan

I saw this last night and I'm still trying to process it. EASILY the weirdest movie I've seen this year (maybe a couple years), but I still liked it. Needless to say, the average Joe (if any go) will hate this, it's a total indie/art flick. Someone did a sarcastic slow clap at the end of the movie of my showing.

The interactions and conversations between everyone was very odd...robotic like, socially awkward, devoid of human emotion. I still can't figure out what the director was going for with those kind of performances.

Of course the most confusing thing of all was the teenager who apparently had some magical powers in a world otherwise set in reality. Was this all allegory and metaphors, like "mother!"? I don't know, I'm going to have to read some other reviews.

I recommend checking it out though, like I said I liked it overall (as I did mother!). Not sure if I'd revisit it though.

agree with your assessment. Such a bizarre movie. The rhythm the dialogue had, through me for a loop. Especially when Martin made his threat at the hospital cafeteria. I have to see it again to fully process it. I liked it though.

I really enjoyed it while watching it unfold... but yea. I’m going to need to watch some analysis on this one.

This felt very much like it was a homage to Kubrick direction.

Re: The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017, Lanthimos) S: Farrell, Kidman, Keoghan

I enjoyed the movie, though the end scene kinda was a head-scratcher. Definitely had Kubrick overtones right down to Kidman looking like she just stepped out of Eyes Wide Shut. Once things started moving, plot-wise, I was enthralled with how the movie will end, what the decision might be. My "guess" wasn't correct. I guess that's half the "fun" of the movie.

But the creepiness factor was very high. Great production values and a nice, weird, cameo by Alicia Silverstone.

Re: The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017, Lanthimos) S: Farrell, Kidman, Keoghan

The dialogue and jarring delivery of every line in this movie was hard to get used to. It reminds me of the description of The Room, where they describe the movie as one made by an alien that had never seen a movie but had heard a lot about them. Only it's more like aliens heard a lot about humans but have never actually met one, just utterly strange. I wound up figuring Lanthimos was going for the "remove all emotion" scenario that doctors are supposed to go through.

I feel like this would make a good double feature with mother! for just sheer, hit you over the head uniqueness and brazen weirdness.

Just watched it and it was alright. It's a cold film, very Kubrick, I suppose, but not as coherent. Kidman still has a smokin' body, though. There is tons of weirdness and creepiness throughout. I have not seen The Lobster or any of the director's Greek language films, though. I think Deer had amazing cinematography and production.

An interesting film that combines the techniques of three legendary directors: the visuals of Stanley Kubrick, the deadpan acting of Robert Bresson and the surrealness of Luis Bu˝uel. Yorgos Lanthimos does it again. One of the best of 2017.

4.5/5

Re: The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017, Lanthimos) S: Farrell, Kidman, Keoghan

I thought this was one of the most unforgettable films of 2017. Still not exactly sure what all happened or why it happened. I'll need to revisit this again.

When I heard all the dialogue was deadpan (before seeing it), I thought it would be awful, but it works.

The boy playing Martin is one of the creepiest fucks I've seen on film in a long time.

Can't wait to see what the director does next.

I agree, but the old farts at the Oscars don't acknowledge films like this (I'm still surprised that The Lobster was nominated for best screenplay). TKOASD could have been nominated for best screenplay, cinematography, supporting actor and actress. Oh well, at least it won best screenplay at Cannes and was nominated for the Palme d'Or.
