Critically Panned Movies You Kinda Dug

I'm not saying you loved the movie or found it an underappreciated masterpiece. More like the movie was thrown in the dumper by mainstream critics and you're attitude after watching it was basically "Eh, it was alright."

Some that come to mind:

-Hansel and Gretel Witch Hunters -B movie fun
-Van Helsing - okay, last third kind of blows, but for the most part I was entertained
-King Arthur (2017)- closest representation of live action Frank Frazetta since the first Conan
-Lone Ranger (2013)- too long, but still entertaining at the right parts
-Batman v Superman-dug it for the most part, but had expectations dirt low after seeing early reviews

Man-Thing. Okay, it was NOT a very faithful adaptation of the Marvel comics character, but it WAS a pretty good comic-book, swamp monster movie, IMO.

Cabin Boy. I'm a huge Chris Elliott fan, and I pretty much laugh non-stop through the whole thing every time I watch this.

Elektra. I thought Garner was above-average in the action scenes, and I just liked the movie.

Reign of Fire. I'm sorry, but this ROCKED!! Christian Bale, Gerard Butler and awesome dragon effects.

Re: Critically Panned Movies You Kinda Dug

BILL AND TED'S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE was panned by critics and it's a wonderful movie as I'm sure many here will agree. A friend of mine panned it in her published review and I was furious with her.

I enjoyed PUNISHER: WAR ZONE a great deal, but it was panned by critics and many fanboys as well.

OTOH, there are many films that are praised to high heaven that turn out to be just awful, as well as many films that may not get such great reviews but get raved about here, prompting me to go see them and then regretting it. I won't mention any because I don't want to start those arguments again.

Another Elektra fan? There's two of us! I love that movie, never understood the hate.

I'll add Sucker Punch. Not great but I dig the visuals/action, and it has some nice eye candy.

Transformers 3 - It certainly has its flaws, mostly in the first act, but the Battle of Chicago toward the end is so balls-to-the-wall I have to respect Michael Bay for going so crazy with the action.

Drop Dead Gorgeous - 44% on RT. Movie is fucking awesome.

Brainscan - 17% on RT. Damn, I need to watch this again. Maybe it IS that bad...

(Assuming RT scores are reasonable estimates of what critics were thinking about these flicks of that era...)

The Last Witch Hunter
Split Second - 58% on RT, so maybe some critics kind of liked it, but I remember it was not loved by the critics back when I saw and enjoyed the film in theaters. I think with the passage of time more and more people who discover this film find it to be a bit underrated. It is long overdue to come out on Blu or be available in HD on Netflix.

Death to Smoochy, The Fountain, and Equilibrium. I'd say my sentiments toward all three of those would classify as a step or two above "kinda dug".

To a lesser degree, Outlander, the Bedazzled remake, and The Butterfly Effect.

I remember watching Howard the Duck when it first came out on VHS in late 1986 or early 1987 and thoroughly enjoying the movie. I was 8 years old and there was no Simpsons or South Park, so I found it shockingly hilarious that the cute duck character drank beer, and had a no-shit attitude. Added all the special effects and alien monsters, I found the movie completely entertaining. So much I was shocked when afterwards I asked my father how he liked the movie and he held his nose like someone had just released a noxious fart.

I watched Howard the Duck for the first time since I was a kid a couple of years ago and I thought it held up great. It's funny. It has pathos. The effects are top notch. There's all the weird sexual stuff going on.

Howard the Duck is absolutely in the league of scifi/comedy movies like Men in Black, so I can't figure out why it became a cheap short-hand for shitty movie. There was so much garbage released in 1986 like The Money Pit, why is poor Howard considered the big turd of the year?

Split Second ... sci-fi flick with Rutger Hauer? That's all I remember. I think I worked in a movie theater when it came out ...

For me:

John Carter (thanks for fucking up the marketing Disney)
Alien Resurrection (yes, the newborn was awful but the movie was gorgeous and a fun ride).

I recall enjoying Waterworld (Dennis Hopper man, Dennis Hopper) but don't think I ever watched it a second time.

Revenge of the Fallen (Part 2) actually got worst reviews than Dark of the Moon.

I also liked Part 3.

Re: Critically Panned Movies You Kinda Dug

Okay, I know quite a few dvd talkers like the film almost as much as I do, but I can safely bring up Predator 2 in this thread...25% on RT, so critics definitely savaged the film. The thing is that I love this film, it is gritty as hell and feels like it would be right at home being played in a rundown theater in the 70s that played grind house flicks. The language, violence, nudity, and over the top gory deaths make Predator 2 a crazy enjoyable grind house film.
