Virtuosity.

It was first time I saw Russell Crowe in anything and thought he was great as SID 6.7. And that was just a couple of years before Denzel became "Denzel". Solid action flick.

Daredevil- sure it's not great and especially compared to superhero movies now and the Netflix series it's not as good but I never really hated the movie. The director's edition is better than the theatrical.

Robocop (2014 remake)- I went in prepared to hate it but honestly it wasn't that bad as its own thing. The problem is that it was always going to be compared with the superior original but it has some aspects I like.

Terminator Salvation- I enjoyed it for being something different in the franchise. It was the first time the formula deviated from the normal Terminator gets sent back to kill someone. It actually disappoints me somewhat that we didn't get the planned sequels.

Re: Critically Panned Movies You Kinda Dug

Not sure how it is perceived today, but The Cable Guy was ripped by the critics in 1996. I still think it is one of Jim Carrey's funniest movies behind Ace Ventura and Dumb and Dumber. I think it didn't do well at the Box Office because he essentially was playing the villain (or somewhat sympathetic villain) in the movie. I remember one critic said, "No one wants to see Jim Carrey act like a jerk for 90 minutes." His next movie was the safe Liar Liar, and it seemed that Carrey took the criticism to heart as he never did any real daring comedies after that.

I can probably sit here and name dozens of movies but these jumped into my mind right away, probably because I've seen them all rather recently:

The Replacements
The Longest Yard remake
Dirty Work

Re: Critically Panned Movies You Kinda Dug

What Dreams May Come, I still assert, is a near-masterpiece. I'm often very alone on that assertion. At least Roger Ebert agreed with me.

I was really entertained by Bonfire of the Vanities back in 1990, but I had never read the book (nor did I care to). In many ways it was a bit before its time.

Ishtar is a great movie, absolutely hilarious. Synonymous with BOMB. Boo.

Some of my favorite 80s comedies were critically mauled. The two standouts are Blind Date and The Money Pit. Always reliable for the laughs, every time.

The Shadow (1994) is 35% on RT.

My usual response is Deathstalker II, but it's gone up to 66% on RT audience reviews. Yay!

The Thing RT 82%

Blade Runner RT 89%

Both movies were immediately hailed as classics of their genres. There may have been some negative reviews (as there always is with Horror and Sci Fi films), but those were NOT widely panned.

That's because none of the reviews on RT are before the year 2000. Both of those films when released 35 years ago were despised by critics.

Vertigo RT is 97% and that's also because of the same reason. Even though it's considered one of the greatest films ever made, it was also hated by critics in 1958.

Grease 2 - I never understood the hate.

The Mummy with Tom Cruise - it wasn't as bad as they are saying.

Dead Man on Campus is sitting at 15% on RT and it's one of my favorites. MPG is HILARIOUS, the different roommates are all great, it's the first appearance of Alyson Hannigan and Jason Segal together, etc.

I chatted with Jason Segal a few years ago and I had just watched this movie again so I complimented him on it. He lit up like no one ever asks him about it - it was his first big movie and he told me about calling his dad just to rave about craft services.

I liked the Wachowskis' Speed Racer. I'm not sure what people were expecting but it's pretty much an anime brought to life.

RT doesn't suck, they're not the ones rating the movies.

.
And Linda Cardellini (who was unknown at the time) has a small role in it as Segal's girlfriend.

Not correct, at least for Blade Runner. I was a voracious reader of reviews back then an there was a lot of positive reviews of Blade Runner along with some mixed reviews. It got a few Oscar nominations but didn't do well at the box office. I remember reading articles bemoaning its poor box office performance.

The Thing was pretty negatively received as being a gross-out fest and style over substance, but I heard good things even back when it was released. I don't think it was despised.
