Stand By Me. The Outsiders made for a better book than a film, though it's still pretty good.

The Outsiders is good. Unbelievable casting, looking back.

But, Stand By Me is one of my all-time favourite movies.

Outsiders: The Complete Novel version. It's Coppola and a great cast. lots of themes. though Stand By Me is quite entertaining.

Stand By Me is one of my favorite films of all-time. The mix of comedy and drama is perfect in that movie along with each teenage actor giving a great performance.

The changes in music completely ruin that version. I hate it. I will only watch the original regardless if the new scenes add something.

Stand By Me is the better film, though I love both.

Stand By Me. Very easy choice here.

I enjoyed The Outsiders as a movie, but it doesn't come close to Stand By Me.

Re: Stand By Me or The Outsiders

Stand By Me by a small margin for me. The casting for both of those films, wow! What would the price be for assembling them in their respective primes $$$. But, the more intimate story of Stand By Me give it the edge.

Stand By Me. I can relate more with having a group of friends like that when I was around that age and just hanging out and going on goofy adventures every day during the summer.

Re: Stand By Me or The Outsiders

Two things give Stand By Me the clear victory.

-actual teenagers. The guys in the Outsiders are too old.
-the dialogue. Stand By Me is proto Tarantino with its pop culture.

Don't really care for either. If I had to choose I'd say Stand By Me is the lesser of two mehs.

Re: Stand By Me or The Outsiders

Stand By Me by a country mile. I was the same age as the kids were in the movie when it came out, and we played around the tracks all the time. No way I wasn't going to fall in love with this movie.

Re: Stand By Me or The Outsiders

Stand by Me is far superior as a timeless classic. Beautifully shot, perfect cast, and I think any young boy can relate to the story of wanting to go off on an adventure in the woods with your buddies.

I love Stand by Me but if I had one complaint it would be the dialogue gets a little too grown up and a bit unbelievable for kids their age. Especially some dialogue between Gordie and Chris.

Re: Stand By Me or The Outsiders

I know the scene that you're referring to. I don't mind it.

I'm referring to the pop culture stuff. "Annette's tits are getting bigger" and "What the hell is Goofy" and stuff like that. "They just keep Wagontraining."

Also, the whole Lard Ass digression is insane. It was risky to do because it could have derailed the film, but it works perfectly. Name another '80s mass market popular film that used that kind of massive narrative tangent.

Re: Stand By Me or The Outsiders

I love The Outsiders. But Stand By Me is just about the best movie about being a kid ever made.

Stand By Me for me.

I voted for Stand by Me. I think it's a more honest depiction.

Re: Stand By Me or The Outsiders

Stand By Me by a wide margin for me. I saw the movie and read the book within months of each other when I was very close to the age of the characters. I truly feel that this movie and A Christmas Story are the most accurate depictions of the mindset of kids at the ages portrayed.
