But heck it gets the JSA on the screen in some fashion so let's go b-tier.
Interestingly enough, according to Wikipedia, Johnson was meant to play Captain Marvel but grew more interested in Black Adam.

New Line Cinema began the development of a Shazam! feature film in the early 2000s, based on the DC Comics character Captain Marvel. The title came from the wizard Shazam who gives the hero his powers, with DC unable to use the title Captain Marvel due to legal issues.[21] Peter Segal signed on to direct the film in April 2006,[22] and Dwayne Johnson was approached about portraying Captain Marvel later that year. By November 2007, Johnson was also interested in the film's antagonist, Black Adam, and had received positive responses from fans about him possibly playing that character.[23] Development on the film was placed on hold by January 2009,[24] but had begun again by April 2014 when Warner Bros. (the parent company of New Line) and DC began planning a slate of superhero films for its shared universe, the DC Extended Universe (DCEU).[25] That August, Johnson said he was still attached to the film but had not yet decided if he would play Captain Marvel or Black Adam.[26] A month later, Johnson announced that he would portray Black Adam.[27]

In January 2017, Johnson met with DC's Geoff Johns to discuss the project after studio executives grew concerned that an actor of Johnson's profile was being used as a villain and supporting character in the film instead of starring in it. Following that meeting, they decided to split the project into two films: Shazam! (2019), starring the hero Captain Marvel who DC had since rebranded as Shazam; and Black Adam, with Johnson starring as the title antihero.[2] Johnson said the two characters would meet onscreen in the future.[28] Johns confirmed in July that Johnson would not appear in Shazam!,[29] though his likeness is used in that film for a magical hologram of Black Adam conjured by the wizard Shazam.[30

Which, now that I think of it, fits the topsy-turvy DCEU mindset. Heroes don't get solo introductory movies before their big team up film and now a villain gets a solo film with no intention of ever having him battle his hero nemesis in any subsequent film. Afterall, the Rock is presumably pushing for not only a Black Adam vs Superman movie, it's claimed he also wants a movie where the Justice League and Suicide Squad team up to fight Black Adam. That's ridiculously over-the-top for such a second tier character.

One needs to remember Rock's roots. He probably has no real idea as to what is going to happen as a result of this movie, but the wrestler in him is basically building up a story and trying to sell tickets. This basically includes angle/stories like the ones mentioned.
Spoiler:
Since Cavill probably isn't around for many more Superman flicks, it would make sense for him to job to Johnson.

Black Adam is a b-tier character in the comics, but Dwayne Johnson elevates the character for the movies. If the movies sucks, there's no reason to push for Black Adam v Superman or v Justice League sequel, but like you said, his powerset allows him to fight the biggest heroes, so why not?

Wasn't Iron Man a second tier hero for Marvel, at least in the eyes of the general public? Without Downey Jr's enigmatic performance, it likely would have gone the way of both Hulk movies. Johnson brings that same kind of charisma to Black Adam (I'm not a comic book guy so I have never in my life heard of the character). And, if this is what it takes to get Cavill back as a Superman that so be it, I'll be happy to support it.

That is true regarding Iron Man. Heck, I might even call him c-grade prior to the MCU.

Anyhoo, the social media embargo for this flick has been lifted. Mostly positive reactions. It seems the JSA steal the show and even the haters liked the post-credits scene.

Not trying to beat a dead horse, but given the origins and comic history, shouldn't Shazaam and his bunch be the ones fighting Black Adam instead of JSA?

Basically the Rock wanted to be the star of his own superhero franchise and the Shazam movie had been developed for over 20 years before its release not using Black Adam.

Modern comics have had Black Adam against the JSA during John's run

The Shazam family should eventually fight him (and per the Rock that is planned to happen, most likely in Shazam 3) but the decision was made to set them up separately before their eventual showdown. Also, the Rock and Hiram Garcia have stated that the planned Superman/Black Adam crossover movie won't be merely an excuse for a showdown. They have something bigger in mind.

Black Adam was edited down to get a PG-13. There were apparently multiple violent kills that had to be edited.

I was going to see it this week, but I suffered a medical emergency a few days ago, so I’ll be relegated at home for the rest of the week. I’ll hopefully see it next week when I’m better.

I looked on my app and yeah unless you are looking at a premium IMAX or Dolby Cinema screen it's pretty empty on Saturday so far. Probably bodes to a disappointing box office tally.

Reviews coming out: https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/black_adam

Not looking good. I guess that’s why Johnson is spilling stuff in interviews to try and get some broader interest.

I知 sold on seeing this after The Rock let the cat out of the bag about the end credits scene. I always expected a more or less middle of the road movie though so I知 not really surprised by the reviews.

These two reviews contradict one another, despite both being mostly negative. The IGN reviewer complains it's not enough like a modern or Marvel comic book movie. The Joblo reviewer complains that it's trying too hard to be a Marvel movie.

Lots of innuendo circulating that WB executives want Black Adam as a major recurring character in their superhero films over the next decade. He's supposed to be their Thanos.

I wish them luck with that idea. Maybe get some new writers and forget the first Black Adam movie ever existed.

Re: Black Adam (2022, D: Collet-Serra) -- S: Dwayne Johnson

Seems there's currently a lot of demand for the R-rated cut of Black Adam.

https://wegotthiscovered.com/movies/...ew-snyder-cut/
https://fandomwire.com/release-the-r...-pg-13-rating/
https://www.vulture.com/2022/10/blac...ure-films.html

Personally, I'd only be interested if it were an extended cut with all the cut scenes revolving around the JSA.

I wouldn't mind a extended cut. I don't think it needs a different rating.
