Overlord (2018, D: Avery) S: Asbaek, Russell

Paramount Dates Bad Robot’s World War II Pic ‘Overlord’ For October 2018

Paramount announced this morning that it will be releasing Julius Avery’s period war film Overlord on Oct. 26, 2018.

The plotline: On the eve of D-Day, American paratroopers are dropped behind enemy lines to carry out a mission crucial to the invasion’s success. But as they approach their target, they begin to realize there is more going on in this Nazi-occupied village than a simple military operation. They find themselves fighting against supernatural forces, part of a Nazi experiment.

Overlord is written by Billy Ray and Mark Smith and produced by J.J. Abrams and Lindsey Weber. Overlord stars Jovan Adepo and Wyatt Russell.

Some speculate this is a Cloverfield movie.

It's weird, Wyatt Russell has been in a ton of stuff I've seen, but I only actually remember him from an episode of Black Mirror (Playtest)

re: Overlord (2018, D: Avery) S: Asbaek, Russell

Who could have predicted that 2008’s hand-held monster movie Cloverfield would spawn a franchise we’d still be talking about 10 years later? 2016’s surprise sort-of-sequel 10 Cloverfield Lane provided our first look at the anthology-like nature of this loose franchise umbrella, and while we wait to see a trailer for God Particle (now possibly titled Cloverfield Station) and learn when and how we’re actually going to see that movie, we have confirmation that Cloverfield 4 not only exists, but that it’s already completed filming. The project is called Overlord, and you can read all we know about it below.

If the title Overlord sounds vaguely familiar to you, it’s because we wrote about it in March of last year. And while God Particle or Cloverfield Station or whatever the hell that ends up being called is reportedly set on a space station, Overlord is taking a trip back in time to World War II. Here’s the synopsis:

On the eve of D-Day, American paratroopers are dropped behind enemy lines to carry out a mission crucial to the invasion’s success. But as they approach their target, they begin to realize there is more going on in this Nazi-occupied village than a simple military operation. They find themselves fighting against supernatural forces, part of a Nazi experiment.

Overlord is directed by Julius Avery (Son of a Gun) and stars Wyatt Russell (22 Jump Street) and Jovan Adepo (Fences). About a year ago, we speculated that this could be the fourth entry in the slowly-expanding “Clover-verse,” and after ScreenRant theorized about that same thing this morning, we’ve received confirmation from our sources that yes, Overlord is indeed Cloverfield 4, and that the project has completed production.

It all lines up: God Particle started out as a separate project before word came out that it’s set in the Clover-verse, and Overlord followed the same path. They’re both produced by J.J. Abrams and directed by up-and-coming filmmakers (as were the original Cloverfield and 10 Cloverfield Lane), and all of the films so far have featured strong casts and high-concept science fiction stories.

Previous conversations with 10 Cloverfield Lane director Dan Trachtenberg have taught us the events of that movie don’t take place on the same exact timeline as the events of the original film, but there seem to be some aspects that do cross over into the separate films’ alternate timelines. The most important of these is Tagruato, the company that continues to appear in viral marketing materials for the third Cloverfield movie. As I speculated last year in this detailed breakdown, I’m guessing there won’t be much in the way of direct connections to the Clover-verse in Overlord, but I’d put money on Tagruato being involved in some capacity with the Nazis’ supernatural schemes.

God Particle/Cloverfield Station was scheduled to arrive in April 2018 (after multiple delays), but recent rumors indicate that Paramount may end up passing it on to Netflix. Box Office Mojo says Overlord will arrive in theaters on October 26, 2018. But this is Bad Robot we’re talking about, so I’m sure we haven’t seen the last mystery move for either of these films. As always, we’ll keep you in the loop when we hear something concrete.

re: Overlord (2018, D: Avery) S: Asbaek, Russell

Contrary to rumors, J.J. Abrams said “Overlord” will not be the fourth film in the “Cloverfield” series. Instead, the horror film about World War II soldiers who find out the Nazis are using supernatural forces and engaging in gruesome experiments, will be Bad Robot’s first R-rated movie.

“It’s bat shit crazy,” Abrams said in taped remarks for Paramount Pictures’ CinemaCon presentation on Wednesday.

But fans of the popular horror series need not fear. Abrams said that “we’re actually developing a true, dedicated Cloverfield sequel” and unlike the most recent film in the series, which was sold to Netflix, this one will screen in theaters.

The “Overlord” footage lived up to the hype. There’s eerie shots of dead soldiers hanging from trees, genetically modified Nazis, and disembodied and fanged heads. The film follows a band of paratroopers who find themselves behind enemy lines. In a colorful nod to history, the preview contains Paramount Pictures’ logo from the 1940’s.

“Overlord” opens October 26, 2018. The cast includes Jovan Adepo, Wyatt Russell, Jacob Anderson, and Pilou Asbaek. Julius Avery directs the film. Abrams will produce. Bad Robot also oversees the “Star Trek” and “Mission: Impossible” franchises.

That’s one of the worst trailers I’ve ever seen. The music alone is a massive failure. And the movie looks like an assembly of retreads of a dozen other well known films.

A black soldier in a white unit in World War II? Did that ever happen? That all units were segregated.

(Yeah, I get it that this is just a movie)

The trailer did not make me want to watch the movie. It did make me want to play some Wolfenstein.

Looks great - loved the music choice. Better than some bullshit hip-hop remix. I guess this is a prequel/sequel to Cloverfield?

Going in to that trailer knowing absolutely nothing about the movie I have to say it started out really strong, then turned to shit awful damn quick! It reminds me of that Frankenstein’s Army movie that’s been floating around for the last few years.

This looks like a lot of stupid fun. My view of it is that the sci-fi Nazi genre just got a big budget and talented, seasoned filmmakers behind the scenes. Hellboy had a little bit. But nothing this absurd. And we've gotten similar movies from first-timers.

Ugh. I want to make a political joke about Nazis.

The film looks like what I wanted Frankenstein's Army (2013) to be.

I'm in!

Trump was shown an early screening. He has weighed in to say there were fine people on both sides in this movie.

Yeah, every single film I've seen in the last month or so has had this play in front of it. I've got my tickets.

I had no idea this was a Cloverfield movie. What a strange franchise. Now I kind of wish I hadn't found out it kind of killed some of the interest I had in watching it.

That was a rumor at first. They've said it isn't.

It’s like calling your shot in pool. It’s stating what’s about to happen.

To extend the metaphor, I’ve played enough games of pool that I can call it with very little margin of error.

Uh-huh. You must have had a very busy day at a local pool hall.
