I think I can explain it right.

It sells like a one-time Bitcoin. Instead of a dollar, it's a piece of art. The rights only belong to the person who owns the token (just like a Bitcoin).

The "digital file" (I assume a big movie file in the file format movies use) is what you get.

The "rights" can simply be sold by reselling the NFT.

So instead of a complicated contract, the owner simply owns the file.

Hypothetically, I guess someone could buy it for $5M, and hold it for ransom to fans who really want to see it. Like that Wu-Tang album bought by the pharma douche. The bidder could be some rich dude who keeps it for himself.

Here is a story on one NFT that just sold for $70M. Probably money laundering or hiding financial crimes. Expensive fine art is for Bond Villains.

Well, shit. Looks like I’m going to have to find another way to launder my $7.

Yeah, I don't get the why this makes it easier or better to sell a film. I'm assuming nothing really changes for the end user (Us, the movie-goer).

If Kevin is selling a film as a NFT, how does that effect things like royalties? Is whoever buys the film responsible for paying our residuals, or are the actors all SOL?

Id imagine it’s just one transaction. I don’t see this being a movie where they care about royalties. A lot of it was filmed with students in Florida.

Re: Killroy Was Here (D: Kevin Smith)

I feel like Smith is hoping some dumbass pays $50M just because it’s an NFT. Like that one guys set of artwork that got $70M.

It sure would convince a lot of investors to invest in indie again.

Edward Snowden just sold a .PNG for 5.5 million.
Literally anyone can look at and make a copy of this PNG.
That's because snowden didn't sell the art itself. He sold a one-of-a-kind token that says some anonymous dweeb now owns the art.

Here is the PNG. I'll just embed the original, because  this whole thing is stupid.

This is, essentially, what Smith is doing, except at least he's promising a tangible product (the movie) to go with the token.

I can't see this working in the long run for movies and music where those involved get royalty payments. Who is going to pay them? A friend of mine to this day gets royalty checks for songs he produced years ago, including some songs for Tupac. I just don't understand how this will work in the long run for actors, producers, musicians, etc. in larger pieces of work. A painting or something else by one artist? Sure! A fossilized Mr. Hanky from your own toilet collection? No problem. Anything else seems to be much more complicated than this stupid idea.

I suspect that the point of NFTs is to put a monetary value on things in a post-scarcity economy.

As Napster showed us twenty years ago, there's really no concept of ownership or limited supply in the digital realm. Computer files (be it audio, video, images, or programs) can be copied and passed around without control, and copied as many times as wanted. NFTs and cryptocurrency exist so that rich people can find ways to put value on things that have finite demand and infinite supply.

Whatever happened to this? Was the movie ever made?

 5,555 tokens instead of the original plan of a theatrical release just one token.
well, at least that's more 'copies' than blu-rays this would ever sell. Good grift, Kev.

So none of his fans will ever get to see this.
I thought he was making movies for himself and his fans.

oh well.

It looks like it's $198 to get a copy on the NFT platform.

This popped into my head for some reason. I was thinking “does Kevin have an unreleased movie” because I thought of that featurette.

So in layman speak, how do I even watch this? Do I have to ask one of my drug dealer friends to send some undocumented crypto to a wallet somewhere and I’ll get an mp3 to watch on windows media player? Or do I get to login and watch like on Louis CK’s site?

I watched this recently and you either have to find someone to sell you the NFT or share the link to their copy or just send you the video file, if you buy it once you own it it goes into your nft portfolio and you and then download it to you computer or do whatever you want with it and then your nft stays in your portfolio as a file as well

I expected to like it. Red State was rough but solid. Kevin Smith’s earnest approach works well with his horror films.

I hope he made some money on this. Shame I have to work though figuring out what some shitcoin is to pay for an NFT which I don’t understand either.

6.3 rating with 78 people chiming in on IMDB. Not sure that helps.

Its cheesy and dumb but has some fun moments in it. I think its better than Yoga Hosers and Tusk as far as his horror movies go.
