The Witches (1990)? Fun movie, but I'm not sure I'd rank it as one of the scariest.

There are some titles on that list I would happily replace with Jacob's Ladder.

Meh, with the exception of unforgivably leaving The Exorcist off the list, it looks just like every other Top ____ Horror movies list ever made.

And while I probably wouldn't put up much of a fight over it's inclusion, Salo has to be the most overrated movie to appear on this list.

The Haunting (1963) and The Innocents (1961) need to be in the list.

It sure scared the bejesus out of me as a kid. If only the folks at Warner Archive would get off their asses and release it on blu-ray.

Anjelica Huston has never looked lovelier.

The Exorcist was likely consciously left off the list as clickbait fodder. These type of lists on the net are less an honest accounting of actual movies and more about generating controversy for clicks.

I think "Bravo's 100 scariest movie moments" was a better list.

Human Centipede shouldn't be on the list, much less in the top 10. HC2 was much better.

Missing a lot of good asian horror on the list.

Ringu
A Tale of Two Sisters

Ju-on The Grudge

I disagree. HC1 is way better.

Comparing HC1 with HC2 is the same as comparing colon cancer to brain cancer. One is deadlier than the other but both suck.

I'd add The VVitch.

After over 20 years, I saw it not too long ago and while it does have its moments, I found it kind of silly and exploitative.

Re: Esquire : The 50 Scariest Movies of All Time

I've rarely found monsters at all frightening, with the possible exception of the zombies in Romero's Living Dead movies, but I do find deranged humans scary (esp. in real life). One of the scariest movies I've seen this year was WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE? I first saw it decades ago and don't recall my reaction to it. I was young then, but now I'm older than both Davis and Crawford were when they made that movie and I found Davis truly scary. I think it's because, as an older person, I understand Crawford's vulnerability and helplessness a lot more. It's a fate that looms much larger than it did when I was in my 20s.

Pretty lame list...

Only about half of the movies on the list are actually "scary." Another quarter or so are solid genre classics (ie, Frankenstein) but in no way classifiable as "scary" let alone of "all time." And more than a couple are just lousy movies period... Cabin Fever, Human Centipede, The Lords of Salem... wtf?

It looks like the list includes variations of horror such as "psychological" horror. But if that's the case there's no excuse for not including Jacob's Ladder or Session 9 to the list.

I disappointed that HC1 wasn't more gratuitous.

Saw headline, decided I'd read it as long as The Exorcist was at the top of the list. Bye!
