One thing I’ll say is it kinda cheapens the character’s death in the first film if he comes back. It’s not like Superman or something where we all knew he’d be back. A big chunk of the plot hinges on Steve’s sacrifice restoring Diana’s faith in humanity. I get why they’d want him back because of their chemistry on screen but still.

I am stoked for this. Considering how long these comics have been around, I like setting movie franchises like WW and the X-Men in those same eras.

Also, to answer the question of why the 80s are big these days, it's because lots of movie decision makers are around my age (41) and I was born in 1976, so the 80s were my prime-growing up time. Patty Jenkins is 46, for example. That's right in her wheelhouse.

They are going back to what they know. In 10 years it'll be all 90s, all the time.

It's a hokey idea, but not without precedent: in the Lynda Carter TV series, Lyle Waggoner played Steve Trevor in the first season (set during World War II) and Steve Trevor Jr. in seasons 2-3 (when they moved the series to present day).
Interesting theory but who did he knock up before his demise? Also, being conservative, let's put Steve Trevor at 30 years old in 1920. Assuming he planted his seed immediately prior to the film, Trevor Jr. would be pushing 65 by 1984. I guess in the DCEU it would be closer to Steve Trevor, III.

At any rate, solid choice of photos to get people talking.

I'm gonna say Trevor is some form of an illusion designed to screw with Diana's head and get her off her game- conjured up by Circe who I still think will be revealed as the films "surprise!" villain.

I'm fairly certain they released the Pine one because they other unofficial ones would be released (and eventually were) so figured they might as well get in front of it.

Based on the pic, he has the look of confusion about his surroundings (much like Diana was in the first movie once she and Trevor arrived in London). Likely she helped Trevor pick out his wardrobe (again, mirroring the first movie, just reversed).

But why would this illusion be dressed in 1980s clothes?

Trevor is clearly dead at the end of WW with the way she was looking at his picture. I can't believe they'd bring him back and then kill him again or mess with their own timeline that they just established. I think he's some kind of illusion or hallucination.

While I agree- the general rule of thumb has had nostalgia influence running in 20 year cycles- In the seventies it was the 50's, the 80's it was the 60's...

We should be deep into the 90's now, but I'm guessing the trend of delayed traditional adulthood markers (family, children, marriage, etc) is playing a part in drawing the influence of that decade out.

By illusion I'm mean that Circe could be taking a real person from 1984 and just making them appear to Diana as a dead ringer for Trevor.

Obviously, even in this scenario he would't be claiming he was the Trevor she knew before- but the uncanny visual and personality similarities would be enough to pull at her heart strings and fog her head- which I would think would be the whole point.

Then again, I'm just speculating.
This makes the most sense to me, but they could be going in a wholly different direction that we can't imagine right now.

For me it’s not a question of why filmmakers like to use period settings from their heyday but just more why specifically 1984 for this film? The first film having it set when it was felt significant with it being set amidst World War I. I’m not sure what event from 1984 is meaningful enough to set a film in that timeframe specifically. Just seems a bit weird to do another film as a period piece to me when we’ve seen the character in modern times already. Like I said before my main guess is to retcon the idea that she hasn’t been active up until Batman V Superman.

Only three things immediately come to mind: 1984 the book, The 84 Olympics, and Regan’s re-election.

I thought the suffragette movement would have been given a big thematic element in the first film. That was the only thing that stood out to me about the WWI era and why they would feel a need to switch it- other than the WWII era normally associated with her is kind of stale now for these kinds of films.

Turned out the latter was more on the mark. It was for similar reasons Synder did what he did with Man Of Steel- the whole point was to zig when other representations of the character in the past zagged. I don't think Synder ever went any deeper than that in his choices, and Jenkins WW never did either really.

I was more than fine with the change to a WWI backdrop, but they just never used the opportunities present with the change for anything more than superficial nods.

I think part of the reason for the first film being set in World War I as opposed to World War II may have been so people didn’t draw more direct comparisons with Captain America: The First Avenger. I don’t really see why else they would have changed it when her origins are normally tied in with WWII. It wasn’t a big deal overall and didn’t make a lot of difference to the story really.

I'm kind of glad Steve Trevor is back.
While they weren't my ideal couple, they had some solid chemistry.
And if Wonder Woman now has to school Steve Trevor on the world of man, I'll look forward to that reversal.

That, and this being set in the 80s actually has me excited for this sequel.

So they're just skipping Wonder Woman 2 thru Wonder Woman 1,983?

So ... we didn’t have cameras in 1984?

Wonder Woman has spent two films with a 100-year old fuzzy black-and-white photo of Steve as a central character-motivation piece.

Ditto. Totally in for this film.

I really hope that Jenkins can set a separate tone for it.

Something that made the first WW great was that it truly felt like a period film, and it wasn't until the last fight that it turned a bit like a super hero film
So my hope this film plays like an action/comedy or whatever

Not a fan of him returning or the casting of Wiig at all. Both together is double troubleI don’t know how he returns in a movie that isn’t goofier than the first and I don’t want Wiig as the bad guy in a goofy movie after the tone of the first one.

That’s one of the reasons I don’t think he’s really there in 1984.
