“The Mummy” is a literal-minded, bumptious monster mash of a movie. It keeps throwing things at you, and the more you learn about the ersatz intricacy of its “universe,” the less compelling it becomes.
Nice to see at least a little love thrown at the previous iteration of the Mummy Franchise.

The first Mummy movie was really good and just a shit-ton of fun. The sequels became bloated messes, but that first one... satiated any appetite I mightve had for a good Indiana Jones sequel.

I likewise really enjoyed the first one, but thought the second one was a lesser but reasonably worthy followup. They only really lost me with the third one (as well as The Scorpion King).

Agreed. The first one might not have been high art, but it got just about everything right for the type of movie it was trying to be. I don't think I ever saw any of the sequels all the way through--from what I saw, they seemed to increasingly rely on bad CGI.

I remember liking Returns a lot when it came out. But the CGI for the Scorpion King in that one is atrocious.

It's no surprise that the action to come has vastly more in common with the CGI bombast of the Brendan Fraser-starring Mummy films than the quiet, slow-creeping horror of the version Karl Freund directed in 1932. What is surprising is that this film's action makes one slightly nostalgic for the 1999 incarnation, or at least prompts one to ask if it wasn't maybe more fun than we gave it credit for.

The Mummy Returns is awful, but I agree the 1999 one is a lot of fun. None of the later versions hold a candle to the original or the Hammer mummy films.

Both of the Fraser Mummy movies were a lot of fun, despite the bad CGI. I enjoyed Scoprion King. Never saw the last movie with Jet Li.

On vacation in Asia and saw this tonight.
It was okay. I agree pretty much with Stuckman's review. Cruise was good and there were some good visual effects, but I felt like this was a lot been there, done that. The story is kind of all over the place. Weak female lead character. No chemistry with Cruise. Jake Johnson from New Girl was kind of a dumb and unnecessary sidekick for Cruise.
Russell Crowe plays Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Kind of an odd character to put here, but I guess he's supposed to be some kind of link with the Universal monsters movie series.
This will probably make a lot of money overseas because of Cruise. But I don't think this will do big business in the States.
Overall I'd give it a C+
See it if you're a fan of Cruise and can see a matinee. Not something particularly memorable though.

Do you think it's too scary for kids? My daughter (age 7) really wants me to take her to see it. She saw all three Fraser Mummy movies with no issues. So as long as it isn't any more scary then those, I think we would be fine.

Bummed this iteration of The Mummy is more wait for the Blu/cable/Netflix than must see it in the theater, unlike Wonder Woman which really deserves to be seen on the big screen.
The Brendan Fraser The Mummy is an incredibly fun film, with lots of humor, heart, action and holy cow there are some scenes where Rachel Weis is just stunningly gorgeous. Not to mention there was genuine chemistry between her and Brendan Fraser.
Finally, The Mummy Super Bowl trailer/teaser is one of my all time favorites, up there with The Matrix Super Bowl teaser.

If your kid really wants to see it, take her to a matinee and save a few bucks.
I wouldn't spend the extra money on IMAX or 3D.

Rough start so far
Last night’s previews was $2.66M. This is a horrible domestic start for Universal’s Dark Universe monster franchise, with The Mummy on track to be the lowest opening among the studio’s previous Mummy pics and spinoffs

I honestly didn't think it was that bad. Not the best movie out there, but I hope a flop won't stop the Dark Universe from going forward. It has possibilities.

We'll see if the overseas market's love of Cruise can keep it from tanking completely. I love the Universal Classic Monsters but I'm still interested in what they can do with these.

CinemaScore for this: B-. Not good. For comparison, even Batman v Superman managed a 'B'.

Caught this today.
I think I was being very generous giving it 3 stars, and that's just because it was very entertaining and looked great. I am really getting tired of Tom Cruise having leading ladies who are young enough to be his daughter. On top of that, he was VERY miscast in this role. Weakest link by far. If you're looking for someone to play an action hero with comic ability these days, you need to get someone like Chris Pratt (who would have owned this role). That aside, I found the movie mostly good. Liked the obvious homage to American Werewolf in London with the dead sidekick . Crowe did very well in the small role he was given, great as Hyde. Universal needs to learn that if you do a shared universe movie, you need to have a little mini teaser for the next installment somewhere mid-way through or after the credits. I do realize we kind of got that during the end credits with the images of Dracula's skull, wolfman's X-ray, and the Creature's hand on screen, but that really doesn't count.
One last point: if Universal wants to have a big monster rumble, why didn't they just go ahead and do it? It' not like Frankenstein, Dracula, Wolfman, Creature, and Mummy need major introductions. Hello, one might as well just watch Monster Squad, or let Universal buy the rights and remake it.

This. The CG overkill was a bit much in the first two, but damn were they fun. I loved the score for the second one in particular. This one just didn't have that same sense to it.
