I liked both Bone Tomahawk and Brawl in Cell Block 99, but this felt like the 3-hour TV edit of Superman. Slow burn? More like glacial pace. Scenes that could have ended minutes ago just go on forever. Was I supposed to feel like I was actually participating in a police stakeout? Really feel tighter editing could have made this a better film.
I don't even understand things like the "3 Weeks Later..." text early in the movie which was rather unnecessary since it's not like two scenes were joined together featuring the same character. Was Zahler afraid we would mistakenly think time was zipping by too quickly? Heaven forbid!

Bone Tomahawk was goofy fun, even though it was sometimes just plain dumb.
I thought so much of CB99, I bought the 4k disk.
But this movie was hard to become invested with...

I saw this over the weekend and liked it, but it's DEFINITELY slow paced. Clearly the intent was to show everything involved with police work, short of including the paperwork (maybe that's another reason why he had the two main characters bumped from the force at the beginning). Everything about it was about putting a touch of reality behind all the characters; the cops, the criminals, and even the victims.
While the concept is interesting, I'm not sure it holds up to rewatching. Then again, I thought that about Boyhood (which similarly shows the mundane parts of life in addition or even instead of the exciting), but I've been itching to give that movie another go for a while. We'll see...maybe I want to revisit it in a year or two.

I watched this this weekend as well. I think I liked it but it definitely could have used some tighter editing. I’m all for directors to keep their vision in tact but this could have used some trims here and there. I agree that the Jennifer Carpenter subplot was mostly unnecessary, and frankly, felt like it was out of a different movie. I get why it was included but it could have been left out.
The stakeout sequence could have used some tightening up as well. I enjoyed some of the banter back and forth between Gibson and Vaughn but there was a point that I started thinking “Is this movie going to be mostly the partners stakeout of this dude?!”
All that being said, I’m not sure I would support studio interference on the editing process either. I can imagine exactly what would have been edited out and it would have turned out to be a below average buddy cop flick.
Overall I definitely enjoyed it but I’m not sure I have the stamina to watch it again.

I had to bust out one of my all-time favorite (and often used) Mystery Science Theater 3000 riffs: "Meanwhile, in another movie..."

One thing I learned about car-based stakeouts from Mick Belker on Hill Street Blues (maybe some LE people here can confirm?). You get out of the driver's seat. That way if someone asks what you're doing, you're waiting for someone, and the empty driver's seat makes it look plausible.

Finally saw this. Have been looking forward to it and wasn’t disappointed. I’m not getting the hate for this film. As stated, Zahler is 3 for 3. Great performances by Kittles and Gibson. Movie doesn’t seem glacial to me at all. It’s definitely a slow burn but it kept me glued to my seat waiting to see how it would all play out. Not sure if I would revisit too often, but Zahler quickly becoming a must-watch Director for me.

Don't really like Mel Gibson irl due to some of the things he's said and done, but I love him on screen and watch pretty much everything he plays in. One of my favorites of his more recent films (those within the past few years) was Blood Father. So definitely looking forward to seeing this one. =)

I wish my mom would do that. Judge by craft, not by shitty personal life/views. I was over and nothing on so I put LW2 on. Vintage Gibson. She was like yuck. I hate him, will never watch again, because of stuff said/done...

Currently $11.59 on Amazon.
Search says $10 at Target, but Target site says $12.99 . So this might have been a price match.
I do not own the blu-ray yet. I really like and respect what Zahler is doing,so I'm going buy the disc, sooner or latter.
Not sure if this is all the special features
Making of is roughly 40 minutes. The Moral Conflict features is approx 7 minutes.

For anyone with Cinemax and hasn't seen this yet and doesn't want to own it, this will premiere this Friday. So set your DVR.
I rented this months ago and I personally don't think it's worth owning. Does not IMO have any replay value.

I picked this up on Amazon for like ten bucks and finally watched it. I thought it was very good, but just not as enjoyable ( if that word could even apply to Zahler’s films) as Bone and Brawl.
It was slow, but that was obviously the point.
3/3 and I’m eagerly awaiting his next film.

Very good suspense thriller. I was constantly in a state of dying to know what would happen next.
The whole point of the movie is that it could have been shorter, yet it isn’t. Those here saying it could use some trimming are missing the point entirely.

With Parasite being my #2 favorite film of the year this is now my #3 favorite. #1 is still Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.

CB99 was the best of the three. This was at least an hour too long.

I ignored this because the premise felt tired.
Far better than expected. I loved the ethical ideas it presented. Not every motive is shared among the characters, right up to the end.
