It just puts emphasis on what a fucked up world these people lived in. The fates had different plans for her. Think about the ramifications - the husband will probably feel like shit for the rest of his life. She just wanted to stay home with the baby. It really is fucked up just thinking about it but I think that's why it works in terms of context.
It would be like if Trading Places never happened and you watched Coming To America and wondered who the hell are Randolph and Mortimer?

I missed it too.But that happens a lot with me these days..
Anthony Lurasetti: What are we doing here?
Brett Ridgeman: We're monitoring a suspicious individual to figure out if he has any money he doesn't need.
Anthony Lurasetti: Anchovies!

Finally watched my rental last night with 5 days to spare.
Anyways, I liked it, but didn't love. It's super long and the 1st hour is kind of slow. I get it, this is not some badass cop action thriller, it's more of a character-driven movie about flawed people. It did incorporate some dark humor that I liked. But man it took a really long time to get going.
I did however like the 3rd and 4th acts once they got into the robbery. That robbery sequence and what happened to Jen Carpenter's character...wow. I did go oh shit when that sequence happened.
Anyways, it was a good 1-time watch. For me personally this could have been a tight 2 hours and have been fine. It did not need to be 2 hours and 38 minutes.

I give this a try last night...what a disappointment.
After 45 minutes, the Mrs. asked me if I cared.
I had to admit I didn't either.
With its amateur writing, I would like to know why 2 fine genre actors would take this one up.
Maybe they needed a paycheck...

I liked both Bone Tomahawk and Brawl in Cell Block 99, but this felt like the 3-hour TV edit of Superman. Slow burn? More like glacial pace. Scenes that could have ended minutes ago just go on forever. Was I supposed to feel like I was actually participating in a police stakeout? Really feel tighter editing could have made this a better film.
I don't even understand things like the "3 Weeks Later..." text early in the movie which was rather unnecessary since it's not like two scenes were joined together featuring the same character. Was Zahler afraid we would mistakenly think time was zipping by too quickly? Heaven forbid!
