^ I agree with that completely except...I would keep Covenant at # 2 but bump Prometheus down a few notches between Alien 3 and Resurrection.

That's fair. I personally feel that Prometheus & Covenant work best as a pair (even with the perceived gap in the timeline), but individually, Aliens is better than Prometheus, while (IMO), Covenant is better than Aliens.

For me, Covenant's overall bleakness is what makes it shine.

I’ve seen them both but I’ve never watched Prometheus and Covenant as a pair. If I ever get the itch to watch Prometheus again, I’ll couple it with Covenant to see if it plays better.

I’ve only seen Prometheus once but remember leaving completely unimpressed.

I just watched Covenant a few days ago and I'm actually itching to watch it again, but I want all those deleted scenes put back, especially with the flashbacks to the married couple.

"Covenant" is number two alright. Whether you love it or not, how on earth can anyone place it above "Aliens"? That just blows my mind.

I never bought into Aliens being some sort of masterpiece. I always thought it was good but I found Alien to be far superior. I guess I can appreciate that Cameron was able to successfully shift genres on the series but I think Covenant fits a little closer to the original’s sci-fi/horror/suspense mold that Scott started with.

That’s not to say I believe Covenant is worlds better than Alien either but given the choice, I’d probably take Covenant. Of course, ask me this question tomorrow and I might put Alien ahead.

Hold up. So now you’re saying you might take “Covenant” over “Alien”, depending on the day!? Check please. I’m really at a loss. And no, “Aliens” is no masterpiece. But it kind of is compared to “Covenant”. Which didn’t have an original bone in it’s body.

Aliens is pretty good, but I’ve always thought it was somewhat overrated. The first movie is my favorite by a long shot.

Oops sorry, I meant AlienS, with an ‘S’. Now I’m starting to confuse myself.

I think I’m going to do the Prometheus/Covenant duo back to back. Seems right.

I finally watched all of the deleted scenes tonight, and yeah, there's some good stuff in there.
I might try to stitch it together in DaVinci Resolve or something, but I don't think it plays nice with AC3 audio... Hmm.

I'm a huge Covenant fan. Love it. I've grown to appreciate Prometheus more as well.

My rankings

Alien
Aliens
Alien 3

Don't care about the rest. I was quite satisfied with the alien being a mysterious outer space creature. Its existence didn't need to be explained with a ridiculous convoluted biblical/Frankenstein backstory.

Re: Alien: Covenant (Scott, 2017) — The Spoiler Filled Reviews Thread

I watched "Covenant" again tonight after reading everyone's comments. Second time ever. I'm sorry, but I still think the movie is absolute crap. It's a terrible cast, as is the script. Ridley completely abandoned the story line from "Prometheus" to appease fans who bitched there weren't enough Xenomorphs or carnage. And he clearly delivered with that. I think it's such a shame that he didn't finish what he started with Shaw's character and her journey. I wanted to learn more about those Engineers. And not some rehash of the original film.

Pausing just one second in ... that's not weird. I think a massive bottle of Jameson is needed to sit through this movie ... and it may explain why he thinks it is great.

Fortunately he didn’t direct Blade Runner 2049 and fuck that up. Thank you Denis Villeneuve.

I'll watch the video later, but I have to say I loved the scenes with the crew of the ship. I'd totally watch a 90 minute cut of them just dicking around on the ship, talking about stuff.

OK, Dan, I watched the whole video ... and the only thing that guy gets is how to waste 14 minutes of my life. He didn't explain why anything was better than most people think, he just constantly repeated "You know that shit you don't like, I think it's cool."

I did find him entertaining, and yes ... the whole bottle of Jameson was necessary.

I watched the Patrick video, and I agree that it's a better movie if you accept that it (and Prometheus) are about David and not really the xenomorphs.

I've seen several of Patrick's videos and while they are entertaining in some regard, he often comes across as someone trying to suck up to the Hollywood system so they'll one day hire him and his film school degree for work. He actually has a video defending The Last Jedi and one where he says people should quit complaining about plot holes in movies because all movies are fantasy and hence don't have to play by any set of rules.
