Stephen King's Firestarter -- Blumhouse remake (2022, D: Thomas)

‘Firestarter’: Stephen King Classic Reignites With Universal, Blumhouse & Akiva Goldsman Directing

Stephen King’s classic Firestarter will be ablaze on the big screen again in a remake with Oscar winner Akiva Goldsman behind the camera. Goldsman and Blumhouse’s Jason Blum announced the news tonight during the Overlook Film Festival at Timberline Lodge in Mt. Hood, OR, following the opening-night premiere of their latest collaboration Stephanie which Goldsman directed.

Universal is also involved in development with Blumhouse and Goldsman as the studio released the first feature adaptation of the film in May 1984

Talk about the appropriate setting to announce tonight’s news: Timberline Lodge is where Stanley Kubrick shot the hotel exteriors for his big-screen version of King’s The Shining.

I love the original.

With today's special effects I'm sure they can create some pretty fireballs.

If done right this could be effective in 3D.

Only caveat is that it's being directed (and presumably scripted) by Akiva Goldsman. Kind of a mixed filmography.

This could have worked with Abigail breslin after little miss sunshine, not sure there is a good enough actress for this?

The original was great in that it had the awesome tangerine dream score and a great cast; hopefully there's some real talent behind this one.

It'll probably be that kid who's in the new Chris Evans movie.

re: Stephen King's Firestarter -- Blumhouse remake (2022, D: Thomas)

Fatih Akin will direct Universal Pictures, Akiva Goldsman, and Blumhouse Productions’ adaptation of Stephen King’s classic sci-fi thriller novel “Firestarter.”

Scott Teems will adapt the script.

Based on King’s classic novel, the story follows a young girl who develops pyrokinetic abilities and is abducted by a secret government agency that wants to harness her powerful gift as a weapon.

Goldsman will produce along with Jason Blum of Blumhouse. Blum most recently produced the hit “Split” from M. Night Shyamalan and Oscar winner “Get Out” from Jordan Peele. Martha de Laurentiis, who was an associate producer on the 1984 adaptation of “Firestarter” starring a young Drew Barrymore, will executive produce.

VP of production Sara Scott will oversee production for Universal.

This will mark the third time Goldsman and Blum have worked together following the “Paranormal Activity” franchise and “Stephanie.”

After the success of New Line’s “It,” every studio with any sort of King IP has fast-tracked each property into pre-production. The sequel to “It” is about to get underway, Paramount’s “Pet Sematary” is currently in production, and Warner Bros. recently tapped Ewan McGregor to play adult Danny Torrance in the “Shining” sequel “Doctor Sleep,” also starring Rebecca Ferguson.

Universal had been developing “Firestarter” for awhile, and, like other studios, felt it was the time to push out its own King pic. It saw “Firestarter” as the best property that was ready to go.

Akin broke out with “In the Fade,” which took home the Golden Globe for best foreign film. He had previously won the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival for “Head On.”

He is repped by UTA.

Lulu Wilson. She was amazing (and super creepy) in Ouija: Origin of Evil.

Danny Trejo should be Rainbird. He’s the spitting image of the book description.

re: Stephen King's Firestarter -- Blumhouse remake (2022, D: Thomas)

Universal Pictures, Blumhouse Productions and Weed Road Productions are ramping up the adaptation of “Firestarter.” Keith Thomas has been tapped to direct the reboot based on Stephen King’s novel. Sources exclusively tell Variety that Blumhouse also acquired domestic distribution rights to Thomas’ upcoming horror film “The Vigil.”

Scott Teems, who penned Universal and Blumhouse’s “Halloween” sequel “Halloween Kills,” is adapting the screenplay. King’s original story follows a young girl who develops pyro-kinetic abilities and is abducted by a secret government agency that wants to harness her powerful gift as a weapon.

Sources tell Variety that Blumhouse wanted to board the project after being blown away upon seeing “The Vigil” world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival. JD Lifshitz and Raphael Margules at Boulderlight and Adam Margules of Angry Adam Productions are producers on “The Vigil.”

“Every once in a while you see a film that grasps and shakes you. ‘Vigil’ did that for us, and we were eager to be a part of the film and to work with Keith and the BoulderLight team,” Blum said in a statement.”

Akiva Goldsman’s Weed Road Productions will also produce “Firestarter,” along with, Martha De Laurentiis, who was an associate producer on the 1984’s “Firestarter” with Drew Barrymore, will executive produce.” Elle Driver recently acquired the international sales rights out of TIFF.

Blum and Goldsman previously worked together on the “Paranormal Activity” franchise and “Stephanie.”

King’s books have been box-office goldmines with recent adaptations of “It” and “Pet Sematary” becoming commerical hits.

Thomas is is represented by CAA, Antonio D’Intino at Circle of Confusion and Peter Sample at Jackoway Tyerman.

In a new adaptation of Stephen King’s classic thriller from the producers of The Invisible Man, a girl with extraordinary pyrokinetic powers fights to protect her family and herself from sinister forces that seek to capture and control her.

For more than a decade, parents Andy (Zac Efron; Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile; The Greatest Showman) and Vicky (Sydney Lemmon; Fear the Walking Dead, Succession) have been on the run, desperate to hide their daughter Charlie (Ryan Kiera Armstrong; American Horror Story: Double Feature, The Tomorrow War) from a shadowy federal agency that wants to harness her unprecedented gift for creating fire into a weapon of mass destruction.

Andy has taught Charlie how to defuse her power, which is triggered by anger or pain. But as Charlie turns 11, the fire becomes harder and harder to control. After an incident reveals the family’s location, a mysterious operative (Michael Greyeyes; Wild Indian, Rutherford Falls) is deployed to hunt down the family and seize Charlie once and for all. Charlie has other plans.

The film also stars Kurtwood Smith (Amityville: The Awakening, Hitchcock), John Beasley (The Purge: Anarchy, The Sum of All Fears) and Gloria Reuben (Lincoln, Mr. Robot). The Firestarter score is composed by the legendary John Carpenter (Halloween, Christine, The Fog) and his fellow Halloween franchise composers Cody Carpenter and Daniel Davies.

Directed by Keith Thomas (The Vigil), from a screenplay by Scott Teems (Halloween Kills) based on the novel by Stephen King, Firestarter is produced by Jason Blum (Halloween, The Invisible Man) for Blumhouse and Oscar® winner Akiva Goldsman (I Am Legend, Constantine) for Weed Road Pictures. The film’s executive producers are Ryan Turek, Gregory Lessans, Scott Teems, Martha De Laurentiis, J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules.

The IT movies were a lot better than the original TV miniseries.

I meant the remakes of previous adaptations. Carrie, Pet Sematary

That's true. I forgot about those being a remake.

Is it really a remake if it is just based on the same novel, anyway? The IT movies where way better than the miniseries. The new Carrie wasn't superior, but I liked it. Pet Semetary was just garbage though. The good cast couldn't safe it.

Re: Stephen King's Firestarter -- Blumhouse remake (2022, D: Thomas)

This is one of my favorite King books and while I have a soft spot for the original movie, this looks (from my memory anyway) like it follows the book better.

I'm most excited that I can watch it on Peacock. No need to waste a trip to the theater for it.

This actually looks pretty good, and I am a fan of both the book and film. Nice that Carpenter is involved in producing the film score.

The trailer looked pretty good to me and I like seeing Efron playing a more mature part for a change.

We'll see what else is out when this opens. Maybe I'll just watch it on Peacock. Doesn't seem like something I absolutely have to see in the theater.
