This was the point where I finally got the overwhelming appeal of Wolverine.
Reading this material for the first time I was enthralled. The storytelling was just off the charts great.
And this sequence to me is why a strong build up to the Dark Phoenix elements is where the real appeal of the material is.
These idiots just want to cluelessly cut to the climax.

I also think, and John Byrne would probably wretch at the thought, is what ushered in the 80s "grim and gritty" thing in superhero comics, moreso than than Frank Miller or Alan Moore.

I'm so sick of Wolverine. I welcome any X-movie without him and...
Never mind. What, was Alex Kurtzman or Damon Lindelof too busy or something? Nothing short of UNREAL word-of-mouth will get me to see this in theaters.
Then again, I kind of dug Apocalypse so...

I did too.
I'm not familiar with the source material though, so I don't have that hurdle to get over. As a lazy Saturday afternoon romp, I was entertained.
Though I admit I'm not a fan of Turner as Grey. That, maybe more than anything, was my only real complaint.

It's one thing to introduce a world of different mutants to a movie viewing audience and let that sit within the X-universe, but to just up and have Chastain show up as Lilandra with her Imperial Guard? Really?

John Byrne and Chris Clairmont time on X-men was the best for me. Second comes Jim Miller

But yeah, that Dark Phoenix saga was one of the only titles they actually bothered to collect into trade paperback form back in the day, and I remember reading it over and over and over (and only partly because of the Hellfire Club costumes). I mean we had all the individual issues, but it was so much easier to just pick the book up and read it through. So much happened as well, with Dark Phoenix, the Cyclops/Jean/Wolvie triangle, the Hellfire Club, the introduction of Kitty Pryde, the whole fight with the Imperial Guard, just a perfect set of issues that set the X-men up for a long, long time. Claremont's earlier work with Cockrum of course sets it all up, and the later Paul Smith run is woefully underappreciated, but Claremont/Byrne was just firing on all cylinders.
Of course now I'm afraid to re-read it and ruin my nostalgia with all the pointless though balloons and recaps.

I don't even know who Jim Miller is? Or is that the joke?

You are right, I meant to say Jim Lee. I was probably thinking of Frank Miller's run on daredevil. Great stuff too.

I hope they introduce the Star Jammers... kind of the poor man's version of the current GotG. It would be like Fox to do some shit like that.

Off to a great start
X-Men: Dark Phoenix Director Wants to ‘Ground’ the Cosmic Story
Director Simon Kinberg said that he hopes to keep X-Men: Dark Phoenix from being 'too intergalactic.'

Ugh. The grounded in reality stuff worked ok for the first few X-Men movies, but Dark Phoenix should go all out crazy with the space stuff. Aliens, space pirates, planet destroying beings, the works

It would do this no justice if Lilandra isn't a Royal Shi'ar alien and made to be some made up government shit.

Forget Apocalypse. Last I checked there was a pretty popular space-opera-ish movie by Marvel with a talking raccoon and walking tree.
I'm with Fumanstu. I'm not familiar with Dark Phoenix, but I'm down for them going all out crazy.

They spent money that they didn't need to by bringing JLaw back. That money's got to come out of the budget somewhere.
