Movies that are a sequel in name only?

What movies are technically a sequel to another movie, but really have little in common with the previous movie, aside from the title itself?

At this point the Fast and Furious movies have zero to do with the original which was a movie about illegal street racing among young Los Angeles teens.

Re: Movies that are a sequel in name only?

SPL 2 or Kill Zone 2

The original starred Sammo Hung and Donnie Yen. The sequel with Tony Jaa was in name only.

More off the top of my head:

Time Cop 2

Hard Target 2

SWAT 2: Firefight

The Butterfly Effect 2 and 3

House 3: The Horror Show

Jarhead 2 and 3

Delta Force 3

New Police Story and Police Story: Lockdown -- Both starred Jackie Chan, but neither had anything to do with the previous films. Jackie played 2 different characters.

The Marine has 4 sequels or something. Not sure if that counts...

So a 28 year old Paul Walker and 34 year old Vin Diesel back in 2001 is still considered "Teens"

To think that F&F started with illegal street racing and stealing trucks of DVD players.

What kind of name is "The Miz" for a wrestler? Sounds more like a muppet's name.

Speaking of action/war films, weren't there 2 or 3 "sequels" to Jarhead?

Did they really? I had no idea. What's his stage name? To think he proclaimed this on Real World...

Yes.

Both were straight to video action movies only using the Jarhead name.

I actually liked 3. It was low budget with an unknown lead, but it also had Scott Adkins and Dennis Haysbert. It was basically a low budget version of 13 Hours.

Re: Movies that are a sequel in name only?

How dissimilar do they need to be? I just no returning cast good enough, or does the premise have to be different too?

The film Takedown was known as Hackers 2 in some markets.

WarGames: The Dead Code

The Cutting Edge has 3 sequels, each more tenuously connected to the series than the last.

I found two lists online that list some good ones, like American Psycho 2

Meatballs 2, 3 and 4 (technically there were callbacks to the first, but 3 especially was a completely different type of movie)

Hardbodies 2, though at least it had two characters from the first (Scotty was played by someone else though.)

Direct-to-video sequels shouldn't count.

I thought so. It's ironic that they made action sequels to a movie that's whole point was to show the monotonous and mundane life of a soldier dealing with boredom while waiting for something to happen in a war zone.

Re: Movies that are a sequel in name only?

In some places The Vault of Horror was titled Tales From The Crypt II.

I believe Dawn of The Dead was titled Zombie in some places and Zombie was titled Zombie 2

Do The Howling movies have anything to do with each other?

What about Scanners sequels?
