A police raid in Detroit in 1967 results in one of the largest citizen uprisings in the United States' history.

I love Bigelow's work, so I'm definitely in for this.

Great trailer!

Good trailer. What music are they using towards the end? Anywhere I can read up on the real story?

Looks interesting, but for me Bigelow is hit or miss. I like a lot Near Dark, Strange Days & The Hurt Locker. Can't say the same about the rest of her films.

Copies are kind of scarce on Amazon right now, but there's a good chance there will be a movie tie-in sometime soon given that we are approaching the 50th anniversary of the incident. Looks like something worthwhile, especially the times in which we live.

I've been reading The Algiers Motel Incident by John Hersey and was thinking how great it would make as a movie or documentary. So I was surprised to learn they were making a movie about the incident. And it looks excellent from the trailers I've seen.

Also I found a copy of the book for less than $1 at Goodwill. So keep a look out in used bookstores and such and it may show up. Or maybe it'll be reprinted to tie in with the movie?

This looks really good. Glad it will get a wide release in August. I feared it would be limited forever.

Bought my ticket to see this in San Francisco in a few hours!

Luckily for me, even though they are about 40-50 miles away, San Francisco, CA & Emeryville, CA are screening this film a week before it's Wide Release.

re: Detroit (2017, D: Bigelow) S: Boyega, Mackie, Poulter

Saw this a few hours ago.

Loved it. It's incendiary and absolutely claustrophobic.

I know some critics have been pretty hard on it.

The audience I saw it with was fully engaged with the film, either gasping (or covering their mouths like the couple next to me) or talking back loudly at the screen

I thought this was pretty fantastic. Amazing performance by Will Poulter.

Also, I didn't even recognize WALT!!! from Lost in this until the end.

why did this do so poorly? $34 mil budget and $7.7 take isn't super. really good reviews and Bigelow. should have done better...

Historical Period movie = limited appeal

John Boyega= Not really well known actor (aside from Star Wars)

My guess: people go to the the movies to escape. We get our daily dose of civil unrest just watching the news.

Is this the incident where the police literally dropped a bomb on the people occupying a building?

This. Terrible idea to release this movie during the Summer. Should have been a Fall release or a February (Black History Month) movie - depending on whether they thought it was an Oscar contender or not.

Yea. I don't get the summer release. The film will get overlooked, which is a shame.

This as well. I caught this today and it was a really good movie that could ave been a major awards contender were it not released in a time period where people aren't in the mood for the higher end stuff. I am guessing they wanted to have it out closer to the actual 50th anniversary of the incident. Summertime typically only has room for one major critically acclaimed awards contender and that was filled by Dunkirk.

Bafflingly enough, it seems studios have made this mistake in the past. I remember Cinderella Man coming out in the summer of '05 and getting good reviews , but not doing well and thus being more or less forgotten during awards season.

Re: Detroit (2017, D: Bigelow) S: Boyega, Mackie, Poulter

Saw this tonight. I knew nothing about the real life events and very little about the movie itself. All I knew was that it was a true story based on the civil rights struggle in Detroit in the sixties. So I went in pretty blind.

This movie had a strange effect on me. I was really enjoying the movie until about half way through the actual incident when I really felt like I was watching a remake of The Last House On The Left. It felt like torture porn. But at the same time it struck me that, well, this is likely exactly how it went down. This is what these people went through. You can't shy away from stuff like this. Its a story that needed to be told as honestly as possible. But at the same time, it felt like too much. So yeah it kind of polarized me. As a film vs a real story. I don't know, I'm having trouble internalizing the film. It was powerful as hell though, to be sure.

Anyways, I'm surprised Armond White's negative review hasn't dropped yet.
