Empires fall, love survives. When Michael (Oscar Isaac), a brilliant medical student, meets Ana (Charlotte Le Bon), their shared Armenian heritage sparks an attraction that explodes into a romantic rivalry between Michael and Ana's boyfriend Chris (Christian Bale), a famous American photojournalist dedicated to exposing political truth. As the Ottoman Empire crumbles into war-torn chaos, their conflicting passions must be deferred while they join forces to get their people to safety and survive themselves. The Promise is directed by Academy Award winning filmmaker Terry George.

This opens wide 4/21/17. Reviews aren't very good: https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/the_promise_2017

A shame with the talent involved.

I was shocked to hear there was a $90 million budget for this. I would've expected a standard indie/foreign "epic" price tag in the $25-$35 million range. Did producers really expect this to make $100 million + and get their money back?

Too bad this wasn't a better movie since the people involved are certainly capable and the cause is a good one. Sadly Turkey will interpret this movie's failure as an affirmation that the Armenian Genocide didn't happen. Imdb was flooded with tens of thousands of fake negative ratings for this before the movie was even widely released.

Terrible title. It makes it sound like one of those pseudo Religious Hallmark Channel type movies.

Or a Nicholas Sparks adaptation. And watching the TV spots, it kind of looked like one.

Seems the title is also quite popular:

The Promise (2005)

The Promise (1979)

Before he died Kirk Kerkorian, an Armenian, pledged 100 million to fund The Promise out of his own pocket.

Film is an epic and worth seeing.

Agree though that the title is bad. Also a stronger director was probably needed considering the scope.

Had to look who directed: Terry George (Hotel Rwanda, Reservation Road)

That's exactly what I thought it was. Produced by Kirk Cameron...

It's too bad to defend a movie on it's topic and historical importance, but as a film, this was a mess. It felt very cut and paste and not enough depth or one note direction. Also for a movie that is 13 minutes over two hours, the movie felt like three hours

Thats a shame. I thought the trailer was terrific. Plus they managed to assemble a hell of a lot of talent on both sides of the camera.
