Ain't no sequel without some Soul Glo.

James Earl Jones will have reprised all three of his most iconic film performances in the past few years now.

WTF?
Even Semmi would have questioned this.
Tracy Morgan Joins Eddie Murphy in 'Coming to America' Sequel (Exclusive)
2:33 PM PDT 8/19/2019 by Borys Kit
Wesley Snipes, Lesley Jones and Kiki Layne are among the film's other new castmembers.
Tracy Morgan has joined Eddie Murphy in Coming 2 America, Paramount’s sequel to its popular 1988 comedy.
The studio has lined up an array of new and returning talent for the feature project, which is being directed by Craig Brewer. Wesley Snipes, Lesley Jones and Kiki Layne are among the new castmembers, while Arsenio Hall, James Earl Jones and Shari Headley are among the returnees.
The original film saw Murphy play Prince Akeem, a spoiled prince from the fictional African nation of Zamunda, who arrives in Queens and in undercover fashion gets a job at a McDonald’s knockoff while trying to find a wife.
The new story sees Akeem, now set to become king, discovering he has a son he never knew about, a street-savvy Queens native named Lavelle. Honoring his father's dying wish to groom his son as a newly crowned prince, Akeem must once again return to America.
Jones is playing the son’s mother, a woman who had a one-night stand with Akeem, leading to pregnancy. Morgan will play Jones’ brother, a hustler named Reem.
Production is due to begin later this month on the project, which has a Dec. 18, 2020, release. Murphy is producing with Kevin Misher and Kenya Barris.
Morgan, who earned Emmy nominations for his work on 30 Rock and Saturday Night Live, stars on the TBS comedy The Last O.G., which recently wrapped its second season. The comedian, who last month hosted the 2019 ESPYs, is doing voicework for Scoob, Warner Bros.’ animated Scooby-Doo movie, and Green Eggs and Ham, Netflix’s all-star animated take on the Dr. Seuss classic.
Morgan is repped by CAA and Hansen Jacobson.

Surprised not to Netflix considering Paramount normally offloads there. But $125 seems kinda rich for an acquisition for them.

Paramount is happy. They made their money back and lots more. But, this is another kick in the nuts for AMC and Cinemark who are just trying to hang on in a shitty year.

December 18th of THIS year? Is there even a trailer for it?
EDIT: Just checked out IMDb. Wow, that will be a fun movie to watch during the holidays.

It may be the biggest, most-anticipated movie to ever come to a streaming service, but still so what? At least Netflix is looking for Oscars and prestige when they foot the bill for a movie like The Irishman or Mank.

It’s a drop in the bucket for Amazon. Comparing it to how Netflix operates isn’t the same.

How can that make any financial sense for Amazon? Do they think that they will get enough new subscribers to their service to pay for that content?

Yeah, it’s Amazon. They can more than afford the purchase without worrying about making money back.
Anyways, it’s cool that we’re going to get this. The first film is fun, and while a sequel isn’t necessary I’ll still watch it.
At this point I don’t think it would have mattered either way. What was the alternative for Paramount? Wait until closer to release only to push it back anyways?

It's not like Amazon Studios has spent a lot on their films. Probably their biggest spend was for The Aeronauts, so they can splurge on Coming to America 2 and hope for Dolemite Is My Name returns. It's less of a gamble than 6 Underground, has an established IP and it's a win win for Paramount/Amazon... but a lose lose for theaters.

No one is going to subscribe to Amazon/Prime video just to watch this movie. If you're not firmly entrenched in the Amazon ecosystem, then I don't think anyone will care enough for a sequel to an Eddie Murphy movie from 32 years ago. This is just a nice bonus for those of us who already have it.

Does anyone even sign up for Prime on purpose? It seems like people with Prime fell assbackwards into it. You either got a new credit card and it came with Prime or you wanted faster shipping from Amazon and you got access to movies, etc. No one actually signs up for Prime for the movies/TVshows, you just end up with it.

No one will probably subscribe to Prime specifically for this, but a lot of people already have it.

I signed up for Prime for the delivery aspect. Watching content on it is just a bonus to me. I do believe that they will get a large number of people to sign up just to see this that were maybe on the fence about subscribing to Prime. A big release movie might make them pull the trigger and they are probably hoping they like the service and stick with it or sign up and forget to cancel. I can't remember and to lazy to look but doesn't Amazon have a free trial offering of Prime? People could do that or just sign up for the month and see it that way as well. Regardless, I'm glad they are providing it but don't see how this makes any money for them.

Prime Video has one purpose and one purpose only, It lures customers to amazon and hopefully they stay for some shopping. There are some nice shows but no 'must see'. There's no Stranger Things, no Game of Thrones, no The Walking Dead, no The Mandalorian...
The Lord of the Rings will be the first real reason for more people to sign up.
