Watched the original for the first time in at least twenty years the other day, impressed with how well it holds up. One of the better movies of its era.
I was also struck by how gentle of a movie it is. Despite the brief nude scene and multiple f-words, it never feels coarse. It has the tone of a PG-13 movie (in fact I forgot that when it played here in Ontario, it was rated our equivalent of PG-13).

I wonder if they threw more "fucks" into movie for the sole purpose getting an R-rating. It was an Eddie Murphy vehicle, after all, and all of his movies (except for The Golden Child, which was a dud) and stand-up comedy were R-rated.

Yeah, the 80s were a different time, you could get away with full frontal in PG movies.

For fucks sakes, when will comedies ever learn that callbacks are sequel death.

Well, it's watchable, there's a few funny moments, but honestly I only enjoyed it for the callbacks (look it's Louis Anderson! The Soul Glow poster is still on the barber shop wall), so they might as well have just reunited everyone for a Superbowl commercial or something. I didn't like that Akeem wound up feeling like a supporting character.

This has been getting terrible reviews, and it also sounds like Eddie is barely in it after the first act.

30 years later and the only story they could come up with for a sequel was to ret-con the original. That tells you something.

Just watched it. I was really looking forward to seeing this movie, but it's not very good. Barely funny at all. It serves as an update on where the characters are now, but the story wasn't that interesting. I always thought the woman that played Lisa was beautiful in the original movie, but every time she spoke in this one, it made me think of old women who had just taken the dentures out of their mouths. Her face just looked really sunken in, but in other recent pictures I've seen of her online, she doesn't look like that.

Well this was a big fat "meh". And surprisingly the person I liked the most in it was Leslie Jones. Who I usually find unbearable. But she was remarkably tame here. And pretty funny.

It was okay. As a Prince fan, I loved the "Gett Off" scene. But the last 1/3 of the movie seemed to drag because it was so predictable. Needed more jokes, and less "drama."

I just finished it. It was okay. I got some laughs out of it.
I did watch Coming to America again for the 1st time since probably 1989 before this on Amazon to refresh my memory of these characters. And then I watched the sequel right after. They did play well back to back.
I think the problem with this movie is that it felt like an almost rehash of the 1st movie, just slightly modified to make LaVelle the fish out of water in Zamunda and of course he wasn't as sophisticated as Akeem. The callbacks to the 1st movie were a little annoying.
I did at the poorly constructed recreation from the 1st movie. That was some pretty terrible makeup and wigs on Arsenio and Eddie to recreate the club scene from the 1st movie.
Shari Headley looked fine to me. She's just 34 years older. And it was cool seeing Garcelle Beauvais in this even though her character doesn't speak and is insignificant.
I know it's just a gag characters, but I'm surprised the people in the barber shop would still be alive 30+ years later.
Watching this once on Amazon was good enough for me. I didn't think it was a waste of time, but this sequel didn't need to be made. Paramount is happy. They got their money and Amazon has a new 2021 major studio movie in their library.

We found it enjoyable. I thought the callbacks were fun and Snipes looked to be having a ball here. I'm amazed at the number of actors from the first appeared here. Now where's my Bowfinger sequel!

One of the worst sequels I have ever watched. Up there with Beverly Hills Cop 3 and Speed 2 for me.

We watched this last night and agree with most here it was terrible. I was never a fan of the fist one either so that may be some bias on my part but it was bad.
