A reboot completely ignores the previous continuity, usually has the same or similar premise, and has its own version of the original characters. An example of a reboot is the new version of Battlestar Galactica.

Holy fuck... ok. A VERY similar story with little originality.

TFA was more of a soft reboot. It's kind of like Star Trek 2009, where they rebooted the TOS franchise while still maintaining some connective tissue with the original.
TFA, like Trek '09, seems to be another in-continuity reboot, where they knew they couldn't start the franchise up again cold, but still wanted to remake the original trilogy with all of the same plot beats, so instead of building on what came before and making an actual "Episode 7," they just filed off as many serial numbers as they could, brought the original three leads back for what amount to cameos, and went through the motions.
I'm guessing that Matrix Resurrections will fall into this category, where it's still technically Matrix 4, but in an "everything you know is wrong" kind of way.

The Force Awakens is just a sequel. Being unoriginal and copying story beats doesn't make it a reboot.

While the word "reboot" does mean "restart" I feel that the way we use the term for movies has indeed changed (causing some confusion).
I am of the "old school" mentality that a reboot is akin to a remake ... it isn't a strict "redo" but a new way of telling of the same story. A new start with a change.
The "new school" in Hollywood deems anything used to revive or restart a franchise as a reboot (even things most would say are sequels). Not grammatically incorrect, but not how many have come to think of it.

A reboot is the movie-making way of unplugging it and plugging it back in, right?
At any rate, saw an ad for the new Matrix just now, and while it won't make me go to the theater, I am in for a 4k purchase at a price point of 15$ or so.

Regardless I love the secrecy. Feels like 1999. I remember feeling so surprised by everything that happened.
Really looking forward to where it goes. Will probably wake up at 5am and watch it.

I get the sense that I will really like this and a lot of people will hate it.
It seems like the concept of "Love" is going to play a big role in breaking free of Samsara and Maya, which I think is going to cause a lot of people to claim "WW1984 wishing stone" or "Interstellar love ex machina" all over again.

This has me a little more intrigued to revisit this world again. I was hesitant, but it'll be on HBO Max so..

This will probably be the other WB film (along with Dune) that I don’t just stream on HBO Max. I got a ticket for IMAX and will see if things work out schedule wise.

This is still an HBO Max-only movie for me, but I will say the original trailer played a lot better on the big screen than on my phone. Sort of looking forward to this.

Think the 2nd trailer is better than the first, but I still can't get past Morpheus and Agent Smith being recast. Hope we see Fishburne and Weaving again
