Where’d You Go, Bernadette (2019, D: Linklater) S: Blanchett, Crudup

Richard Linklater made headlines last month by announcing he’d direct Robert Downey Jr. in a new untitled project, but it appears he’s making some time to work with two-time Oscar winner Cate Blanchett first.

Linklater originally boarded an adaptation of Maria Semple‘s novel “Where’d You Go, Bernadette” two years ago, with Cate Blanchett coming on board to star in the lead role in November 2015. News around the project has remained virtually silent ever since, but now production is gearing up to start this summer.

The book centers around an agoraphobic architect who goes missing and the journey her 15-year-old daughter goes on to try and find her. “The Spectacular Now” and “The Fault in Our Stars” screenwriters Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber wrote the original script, though Linklater probably made some touch ups. Stephen Feder, who last worked with Linklater on “Everybody Wants Some!!,” will serve as executive producer.

The production’s start date was confirmed at the Texas Film Awards on Thursday night. A walk-on role in “Where’d You Go, Bernadette” was being auctioned off to support the Linklater-founded Austin Film Society and ended up being sold for $42,000. No additional cast members have been announced, though expect the ball to get rolling quickly as summer approaches.

“Where’d You Go, Bernadette” will mark Linklater’s first film since “Everybody Wants Some!!” was released last spring. Cate Blanchett has numerous films set for release this year, including superhero blockbuster “Thor: Ragnarok” and experimental art film “Manifesto.”

How many years until the next "before" movie? 4 or 5?

Really, of all the characters to make a movie about. A Howard Wolowitz looking for his wife movie?

I feel like they'll either never do another one. Or do another one in like 20 years.

Has that been confirmed by Linklater, Delpy or Hawke?

No.

There is nothing official about another movie. If you watch any conversations with them, they say that get together for dinner 5 years after the last film and see if they have anything to say on life. If they feel like they have something to say, they'll make another one. That wouldn't be for a total of 9 years since Midnight (2013). Beyond that, there is no word on another one.

They'll do another one every 9 years till either they can't get financing or one of them dies.

Down to 3 years, hopefully they have had their dinner and are planning it out.

This opens this weekend. No reviews yet.

Linklater is one of my favorite filmmakers, but I don't have a lot of confidence in this. I generally am not the hugest fan of his "for hire" work. I'll hope for the best.

His "for hire" work?

I assume you mean Bad News Bears remake. Do you consider School of Rock a "for hire" project? Because that's a fun movie and still has his sensibilities. Are there any others? Or is that meaning any film he directs but doesn't write?

Yes, School of Rock was for hire. It is fine I suppose. I get why people like it. I just am not a huge fan of it. Me and Orson Welles is another and I'd consider it a minor work of his.

The fact that he got a pass at writing on this is why I still have some hope for it.

Me and Orson Wells? I've never even heard of that one.

I saw on Metacritic today that they ranked all Linklater's films by Metascore. Bernadette came in dead-last : 19 out of 19 with a score of 52. Ouch.
I had forgotten that Boyhood got a perfect 100 -- the only 100 this Century and the first in 20 years since Red (Irène Jacob, not Bruce Willis). It's a crime that Boyhood only won one Oscar. Five years later and the only thing anyone remembers about Birdman was Michael Keaton's performance and that was the only thing it didn't win.

I know what you mean by "for hire". Although some are less clear like Suburbia or Tape where the script wasn't written by Linklater. Feels like as good a time as any to rank his films.

Dazed and Confused 5/5
Before Sunrise 5/5
Before Sunset 5/5
Slacker 4.5/5
Boyhood 4.5/5
Tape 4.25/5
Before Midnight 4.25/5
School of Rock 4/5
A Scanner Darkly 4/5
Everybody Wants Some 4/5
Waking Life 4/5
Suburbia 3.5/5
Bernie 3.5/5
Last Flag Flying 3.5/5
Me And Orson Welles 3.25/5
Bad News Bears 2.5/5
The Newton Boys 2.5/5
Fast Food Nation 2.5/5
It's Impossible to Learn to Plow By Reading Books 2.5/5

Just watched this tonight and I really really enjoyed it. The script is quite good. And Blanchett is brilliant in it. The is hardly Linklater's worst film. I'd give it a solid 8.5/10 rating. Maybe even a 9. Was pleasantly surprised.

Interesting...we saw the trailer over the weekend for this on youtube. It did not really make it look interesting but I like most of what this director does so I will check it out.

"Bernie" was great. Besides my parents, I don't know anyone who didn't like it. And my folks didn't say it was a bad movie, just that they thought it was "morbid" (their words).

Back to "Bernadette", Blachett was so good in it, I'm going to watch the movie again this weekend. I honestly think it's one of her best performances.
