The Foreigner (2017, D: Martin Campbell) -- S: Jackie Chan, Pierce Brosnan

The Foreigner is based on the book The Chinaman by Stephen Leather about a humble restaurant owner (Jackie Chan) in London’s Chinatown who is forced to push his moral and physical boundaries to track down the group of rogue Irish terrorists responsible for the death of his beloved daughter after the justice system fails him. Piece Brosnan will play Liam Hennessy, a former IRA member-turned-government official. It appears around the 1:00 mark. Expected to be released September 29th. So basically this sounds like an Asian/UK version of Death Wish. Haven't seen Jackie in a serious/gritty role in a long time. Probably the most recent was The Shinjuku Incident. |

Martin Campbell. Sold. Shoots action movies for adults - without all the ADD camera movements.

Re: The Foreigner (2017, D: Martin Campbell) -- S: Jackie Chan, Pierce Brosnan
I'm so sick of all these rogue Irish terrorist movies.

Re: The Foreigner (2017, D: Martin Campbell) -- S: Jackie Chan, Pierce Brosnan
I'll see this just because Martin Campbell and Brosnan are working together again.

Re: The Foreigner (2017, D: Martin Campbell) -- S: Jackie Chan, Pierce Brosnan
Would be cool if Brosnan was actually playing an older version of the same character he played in "The Long Good Friday."
Maybe we could even find out what actually happened... Spoiler:

The first trailer.
Looks pretty good. Although I didn't really like the use of rap music in the trailer. |
Re: The Foreigner (2017, D: Martin Campbell) -- S: Jackie Chan, Pierce Brosnan
Interesting to see Chan finally playing (and looking) his age. I figured they'd try and turn him into some kind of former mainland Chinese commie supersoldier in light of Chan's political affiliations over the past decade, so there's some relief that they've at least kept the character's Vietnamese origins from the book.

Re: The Foreigner (2017, D: Martin Campbell) -- S: Jackie Chan, Pierce Brosnan
Damn, they look old and tired in those pix. If I want a geriatric action picture, I'll go see EXPENDABLES 4!
And given all the terrorist acts in England lately coming from a completely different quarter, isn't this kind of, umm, inappropriate? |
Re: The Foreigner (2017, D: Martin Campbell) -- S: Jackie Chan, Pierce Brosnan
It's "Bond vs Chan"....pure all-out action...trailer looked awesome.
|
Re: The Foreigner (2017, D: Martin Campbell) -- S: Jackie Chan, Pierce Brosnan
Yeah I like that we're seeing a dark and violent Jackie Chan for a change.
I didn't realize that Chan's character is supposed to be a Vietnamese immigrant as Brian T mentioned. I watched the trailer again and did notice the Vietnamese passport. |
Re: The Foreigner (2017, D: Martin Campbell) -- S: Jackie Chan, Pierce Brosnan
Damn, that looked fucking dope!
I'm so fucking in for this. |
Re: The Foreigner (2017, D: Martin Campbell) -- S: Jackie Chan, Pierce Brosnan
That honestly looked like straight to VOD stuff to me..

Re: The Foreigner (2017, D: Martin Campbell) -- S: Jackie Chan, Pierce Brosnan
Lots great. Haven't see a Jackie Chan flick in a long time and I love Brosnan and Campbell. I'm in!

Re: The Foreigner (2017, D: Martin Campbell) -- S: Jackie Chan, Pierce Brosnan
Seems like an interesting project. Maybe not an urgent viewing experience, but definitely one to check out in the future. Brosnan looks cold as ice in this flick -- enjoy seeing him in a more villainous role. It also feels like the first time I've seen Chan playing a much older type of character and family man. Hopefully there will be some clever psychological head games played between Chan and Brosnan to go along with all the hot blooded action.

Won't be able to see this until Monday (my next day off), but I am looking forward to this.

Re: The Foreigner (2017, D: Martin Campbell) -- S: Jackie Chan, Pierce Brosnan
Really disappointed this wasn't screened at Beyond Fest since they got Jackie Chan to show up for 3 of his older films. Seen Police Story series enough times.

Re: The Foreigner (2017, D: Martin Campbell) -- S: Jackie Chan, Pierce Brosnan
This was way more a Pierce Brosnan movie than a Jackie Chan movie. I wouldn't go in expecting an action movie. It is more of a political thriller.
Oral Bradley is in this and is damn sexy for pushing 60. |
Re: The Foreigner (2017, D: Martin Campbell) -- S: Jackie Chan, Pierce Brosnan
I liked this more than the critics. Nice to see Jackie in a serious role for a change instead of a goofball like he usually is the last decade or so. I thought the action was entertaining, and that there was enough of it to call the movie an action thriller.
Give it a B |
Re: The Foreigner (2017, D: Martin Campbell) -- S: Jackie Chan, Pierce Brosnan
Saw it today and enjoyed it. Pierce does get more screen time, but it works with Jackies character, weaving in and out of the plot.

Re: The Foreigner (2017, D: Martin Campbell) -- S: Jackie Chan, Pierce Brosnan
So I'm wondering if there is a possibility of a sequel. Especially since it's revealed that he really doesn't know what happened to his daughters and assumed they died. Maybe Liam will use that knowledge? Also was surprised he did nothing to his nephew.
Did Quan record their conversation and uploaded that along with the picture? |
