Worst 80's horror remake in the early to late 2000's?

Starting in 2000 studios went horror remake crazy trying to reboot several horror classics most of which came from Michael Bay. I'm cutting this off after the Nightmare on Elm St remake and not including ones that went straight to video and only limiting it to the theatrical releases.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The one we can blame for kick starting all these. It's not terrible and R. Lee Emery gives a good performance and Jessica Biel makes for a good lead. Trying to change things up on the iconic scenes hurts it though. 3/5

The Amityville Horror: A crappy remake of a movie that was not that great to begin with. 2/5

The Hitcher: Sean Bean is good and Sophia Bush is hot but switching it around where it was the girl instead of the guy being stalked doesn't work as well. Totally forgettable. 2/5

Halloween: Liked it when it first came out but didn't like it when I watched it recently. I like Scout Taylor Compton and credit Zombie for trying something different but it doesn't all come together. 2.5/5

My Bloody Valentine: Lots of fun. Good gore, good nudity and one of the better uses of 3D. 3.5/5

Prom Night: Honestly never seen this since I heard it was awful so I skipped it.

Friday the 13th: It's alright. I didn't like some of the liberties they took with the Jason character but I didn't hate it. Plus Derek Mears was a good Jason. 3/5

Nightmare on Elm St: Liked it when I first saw it, tried watching it again and couldn't even make it through. Takes iconic scenes from the original and makes them boring or overly staged, Rooney Mara looks like she was in a coma during the whole thing and Freddy looks like an Alien. Only positive is Jackie Earle Haley who for what he had to work with did a damn good job as Freddy. Plus Katie Cassidy looked hot. Kind of wish she was the lead actually. Says a lot that this movie totally killed the Nightmare franchise.

Never saw the original sequel, but The Hills Have Eyes 2 remake was pretty bad.

Hmm, interesting question. It's close between Prom Night and Nightmare on Elm Street.

And I actually liked TCM remake.

Good call. Next to Zombie's Halloween II The Hills Have Eye 2 is the worst horror remake I've ever seen. It's filled with possibly the most annoyingly moronic characters I've ever witnessed.

The original sequel is pretty bad too. Most of it is flashbacks back to footage from the first film (even the dog gets a flashback!)

A Nightmare on Elm Street by a wide margin

Re: Worst 80's horror remake in the early to late 2000's?

The Hitcher with Sophia Bush and Sean Bean was actually quite entertaining IMO. I own the DVD. I know it doesn't quite compare with the original with Rutger Hauer, but it was a short and sweet (84 minutes of non-stop mayhem), hard R rated horror movie.

The TCM update with Jessica Biel was also quite entertaining. I didn't see the prequel with Jordana Brewster yet.

Probably my least favorite in your list was Prom Night. PG-13 horror....enough said. Although Brittany Snow is cute.

Nightmare on Elm Street wasn't a needed update, but it was semi-watchable. Just some questionable casting choices like mid 20's Katie Cassidy playing a high school student.

Out of the ones listed: Prom Night.

The worst however, was the remake of The Fog. PG-13 remake of an R rated classic, completely ruined it for me. That ending was completely stupid and I still can't believe I wasted money at the "cheap show" to see it.

Halloween, by far. It still holds at #1 on my "Most Hated Films of All Time" list.

Of the others, My Bloody Valentine is my favorite; I'm also rather fond of the not-listed Piranha remake.

Re: Worst 80's horror remake in the early to late 2000's?

4/5 The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) - sadistic but not disturbing unlike the original. Still, one of the better horror remakes to come out in the 2000s.
4/5 Halloween (2007) - white trash take with some interesting ideas.
4/5 The Amityville Horror (2005) - I thought this wasn't too shabby. Would've been better without the Asian-style horror CGI stuff.
3.5/5 The Hitcher (2007) - this one didn't stick at all. Seen it a few times. It's solid but not very memorable.
3.5/5 Friday the 13th (2009) - felt more like watching TCM. I didn't get any Jason/Camp vibes.
3.5/5 My Bloody Valentine (2009) - Fun but dumb. Gets points for bringing back gratuitous nudity.
3/5 A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010) - Weak with a few strong moments scattered throughout. Nice visuals though.
1.75/5 Prom Night (2008) - this was more unintentional funny than thrilling. I thought the When a Stranger Calls remake was more entertaining.

From the list: Nightmare on Elm Street. Jackie Earle Haley was a bad choice for Freddy.

Not on the list: The Fog

Halloween and Amityville Horror were from the 70s. Another post 2000 remake of a 70s movie that sucked, The Omen.
As bad a movie as Hills Have Eyes 2 remake is, the original is far worse.
Piranha remake really sucked.

One that actually was an improvement, The Island. Big budget remake of shoestring budget Parts: The Clonus Horror.

Halloween wins this one for me easily. It's the only one I shut off part way through. Zombie's take on the characters was way too irritating for me to care about what happened later on.

Re: Worst 80's horror remake in the early to late 2000's?

I voted Halloween, but I could make the case for Prom Night as well. It depends on how I judge this. If we're going by worst film on its own merits, I'd say Prom Night was my least favorite on the list. However, if we're saying worst remake as in the biggest gap in quality between the original and the remake, Halloween wins (or loses) this hands down.

The main reason I voted for Zombie's Halloween is that I just downright hated it more than Prom Night, which was too bland to even be worthy of hatred.

Elm Street would probably be the 3rd worst for me as I hated some of their choices and thought Rooney was terrible in it. But it had a decent tone and a few okay moments which saved it from the bottom.

For your sakes I hope you cut your losses after watching the first one. Zombie's Halloween II makes his remake of Halloween look like Citizen Kane. H2 is one of the worst movies I've ever seen, horror or otherwise.

I've seen all of those except The Hitcher (never saw the original or the remake), but Prom Night is fucking awful and I believe it's the only one in the bunch with a PG-13 rating for theaters.

At first I was like, why are people hating on The Fog, that movie was pretty good. Then I looked it up and I have no idea what that movie is, but I was thinking of The Mist

Contrary to this thread, I thought the "Maniac" remake was very good.
