Does anyone re-watch recent Best Picture winners?

An article in today's New York Post is entitled: "Nobody Cares About Any Recent Best Picture Oscar Winners":

http://nypost.com/2017/02/23/nobody-...oscar-winners/

Here's a quote:
The cream of the crop of Hollywood’s golden age gained immortality. They are rerun and ritually rewatched endlessly, and remain regular pop-culture presences. But nowadays it seems like the Best Picture winner shines for one week in February and then — much like former Knick Jeremy Lin — is mostly forgotten.

Anyone watched last year’s winner, “Spotlight,” lately? Plan on revisiting 2011’s “The Artist” every year?

It’s pretty clear that recent Best Picture winners probably won’t have the cultural longevity of past honorees, such as 1942’s “Casablanca,” 1939’s “Gone With the Wind” and 1965’s “The Sound of Music.”
I tend to agree. I've only seen one of the last six Best Picture winners (THE ARTIST). And the last Best Picture winner I've seen more than once is UNFORGIVEN (1992), 25 years ago. Whereas I've re-watched 30 Best Picture winners from the 1930s to the 1980s, with the 1970s counting for the most.

Here's a Wikipedia chronological list of Best Picture winners:

I rewatch a lot of the recent non winners: Mad Max Fury Road, The Martian, Grand Budapest Hotel, Silver Linings Playbook, Moneyball, Toy Story 3, Inglorious Basterds.

No Country for Old Men is probably the last winner that's on my rewatchable list, and that was '07.

Maybe Hell or High Water from this years noms, that I've seen.

Rewatch? Hell, I've only seen 1 of the last 12 winners. That lone flick? No Country for Old Men The twelve years prior to that, my record is 10 of 12. (the two oddballs are Chicago & English Patient).

I'm not sure if that's because of the winners or my viewing tastes though.

Re: Does anyone re-watch recent Best Picture winners?

I've been doing year end top ten lists for 10 years. The first year I did it was 2007 and that was the only year the Best Picture winner has made my top ten list.

I think the last decade that had consistently great Best Picture Winners was the 70's. Actually it might be the only decade.

I've been meaning to watch Spotlight, but that's because I never saw it last year.

I find most rewatchable, but admit I haven't even seen 4 of the last 5 once.

I picked up a copy of The Artist at an estate sale for a buck and I plan on rewatching it but haven't gotten around to it.

Re: Does anyone re-watch recent Best Picture winners?

A good question would be how many of them are on Netflix? I just rewatched No Country this past week. I've seen all of the nominees the last few years due to their availability but haven't revisited many.

Re: Does anyone re-watch recent Best Picture winners?

Here's a "recent" list:

2015 - "Spotlight"

2013 - "12 Years a Slave"
2012 - "Argo" *
2011 - "The Artist"
2010 - "The King's Speech"
2009 - "The Hurt Locker" *
2008 - "Slumdog Millionaire"
2007 - "No Country for Old Men" *
2006 - "The Departed" *
2005 - "Crash"
2004 - "Million Dollar Baby" *
2003 - "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" *
2002 - "Chicago"
2001 - "A Beautiful Mind"
2000 - "Gladiator" *
1999 - "American Beauty" *
1998 - "Shakespeare in Love"
1997 - "Titanic" *
1996 - "The English Patient"
1995 - "Braveheart"
1994 - "Forrest Gump" *
1993 - "Schindler’s List" *
1992 - "Unforgiven" *
1991 - "The Silence of the Lambs" *
1990 - "Dances With Wolves"

The * represents those I've seen more than once. I'll probably revisit them again at some point. The rest are one and done for me, although I just realized I haven't seen The Artist.

Re: Does anyone re-watch recent Best Picture winners?

^ 1990 -1995 was pretty solid. In addition, I've re-watched Titanic, Gladiator (good movie but not necessarily BP quality), Lord of the Rings:RotK, The Departed, NCFOM, and The Hurt Locker.

The last 5 years or so though, yeah, not likely to become classics. Although I did like The King's Speech a good deal, I'm not sure how soon I'll revisit it.

I can watch Slumdog Millionaire endlessly, as it's one of my ten or so favorite films. Of the films listed in auto's post above, I've seen 14 of the 26 at least once, and 6 at least twice.

Re: Does anyone re-watch recent Best Picture winners?

The only one in the list of winners that I've rewatched is LOTR: ROTK. Some of the nominated movies I'll rewatch (Mad Max: Fury Road, The Martian), but for the most part I have no interest in the movies that actually win.

I've watched The Departed quite a few times. I've also seen No Country For Old Men and Argo a few times at least.

Re: Does anyone re-watch recent Best Picture winners?

Add La La Land to that list if it wins. I will rent it but I doubt I would watch it twice.

If the Revenant won last year that would be a movie I could watch more than once.

I own Birdman blu-ray but have not opened it.

A Beautiful Mind, Slumdog Millionaire, The Departed, Gladiator, and maybe Million Dollar Baby are the only movies from the 2000's I will watch again.

Re: Does anyone re-watch recent Best Picture winners?

I wish I could watch a lot more, but only seem to want to watch comfort movies of late. While those are all great movies I don't tend to watch them repeated times. Something about savioring and waiting...

Re: Does anyone re-watch recent Best Picture winners?

From that 1995-Present list, most of those are good re-watchable movies anyways. So yea I've watched most of them more than once.

I have Titanic, Return of the King, and The Departed memorized like a good album.

Re: Does anyone re-watch recent Best Picture winners?

Oddly, I just rewatched Birdman last night - and liked it even more the second time as it really held up for me as a fascinating, claustrophobic movie. (Keaton wuz ROBBED) I'd actually say the run of the last 3 best pics - Birdman, Spotlight, Moonlight - is one of the best in ages, I loved all three. There were a lot of howlers in the 2000s though - Chicago, Crash, Beautiful Mind, Artist all seem underwhelming as hell now.

Re: Does anyone re-watch recent Best Picture winners?

It lost but La La Land might be considered the winner since fans of musicals will probably watch it again and again and more prone to repeat viewing.

A small film like Moonlight which might alienate Middle America might end up being the forgotten movie.
