I'm guessing in the moment he wasn't sure what was up. Even though he seemed to suspect it was the wrong envelope I'm sure there was still a part of him thinking it was right one, just the wrong names under the title.

In hindsight, He should have said he wanted to confirm before announcing the winner but in the history of the Academy Awards when has that ever needed to be done?

Faye didn't even notice the discrepancy before blurring out the title.

I could see that.... if he had just turned to someone offstage and said something. Thinking about it now... this looks bad for everyone involved...and they've just played into the fake news meme...

How can anyone expect Beatty to know what to do? This has never happened before.

Are you kidding? Probably promoted to network head for creating all this drama. Or this could've been staged to begin with.

Where did that envelope come from? Did DiCaprio have it after Emma Stone's speech?

I'm guessing they have extra envelopes for all the awards just in case.

I wonder if there will be any "Dewey Defeats Truman" style headlines tomorrow from Newspapers that were keeping a late deadline and sent things off to press the second the winner was announced?

This fuckup will be known as 'Trump Karma' since they made fun of him all night.

And I guess Marisa Tomei did win in 1993.

That's my guess : he gave it to a stagehand to give back to Emma Stone, but the stagehands gave it to Beatty instead? Did we see him unseal the envelope or did he just lift the flap?

Edit : Checking that Tweet above, I guess not. Wow, just wow.

One thing I promise : You may forget a lot of things that happened in Award Shows, but you will never forget that.

That producer's Twitter account just jumped from about 500 followers to over 7,000 in the last 30 minutes

Just went from a semi-personal account to a full blown public one.

So, I guess we finally have an explanation as to how "Crash" won Best Picture.

Re: The 89th Academy Awards --> 2017 Awards Show Discussion

Interesting observation from Reddit:

You know what I found interesting, I always figured the orchestra knew who was going to win because they play the correct music so quickly. But in this case as soon as Faye said La La Land, they went right into La La Land music. Which makes me realize that they don't know who's going to win and they have to be ready to play one of a few different songs at a moment's notice.

La La Land needs to hop on this publicity and run commercials announcing it as the best picture winner...for 45 seconds.

Just as the show came back from commercial you can see a stagehand sprinting offstage from where Beatty would have been. He must have handed him the wrong one in a rush.
