The Roy Scheider Appreciation Thread
 

My first exposure to him was actually Blue Thunder. Freaking loved that movie as a kid. It wasn't until many many years later did I come to see his classics like Jaws, The French Connection and then later stuff like 52 Pick-Up, etc. The dude was so badass and I wonder how many regular people even know his name even though they most likely at least seen Jaws.

I'm in the midst of watching All That Jazz for the first time after a tough day. I mean he really had me at "It's show time!". Fantastic stuff and I don't really think he got his due when he was alive.

What do you think?

Anyway, I know many will agree in loving him and hopefully share a tid bit...

looked like a regular guy but also someone who could whoop your ass.

Jaws, The Seven Ups... hell the only reason Jaws 2 worked was because of him... Blue Thunder (JAFO), All That Jazz... have a soft spot for 2010... great actor... his delivery always seemed effortless and real.

I remember seeing Marathon Man as a kid and recognizing him as the sheriff from Jaws. He turned up in a lot of interesting stuff, like Romeo is Bleeding and Naked Lunch.

I just looked at his wikipedia and imdb, and both of them list him appearing uncredited in Jurassic Park as "Brody". I've seen the movie a dozen times and I don't remember that. Where is he?

Roy Scheider has been my favorite actor for many years. Obviously Jaws, The French Connection, and The Seven-Ups are two of his classics but one that hasn't been mentioned yet is Sorcerer. I only recently saw it for the first time a year or two ago when the Blu-ray was released and I absolutely loved it! It should be ranked up there with his other classics.

The Blu-ray release is fantastic, btw.

When talking about the best actors of the 70s, I think Scheider should be in the conversation just as much as Hackman, Pacino, and Redford.

Jaws is one of my all-time favorites. And I have a soft spot for a childhood favorite, his starring role in Tiger Town. That remains one of a few films I still have on VHS.

I first saw him in KLUTE so I knew who he was when THE FRENCH CONNECTION came out.

I bought one of those FRENCH CONNECTION sets that has interviews with Scheider and audio commentary snippets with him. He and Hackman knew each other from New York theater connections, so they had a shared history when they signed on. They shot a lot of stuff on the sly for FC, i.e. with hidden cameras and no permits, in the cold New York winter of early 1971. At one point during the scene where they're following Tony Lo Bianco on Fifth Avenue, an old school buddy of Scheider's spotted him and greeted him and he had to tell him to go away 'cuz he was shooting a movie. Funny stuff.

Despite being an obviously great actor and appearing in a handful of films that people consider alltime classics, it sure seems like not very many people have talked this guy up over the years. He never gets a mention with DeNiro, Pacino, Nicholson, Hackman, Duvall, Hoffman etc even though he deserves it. Warren Oates too. Probably the 2 most underrated actors of their generation.

Gene Siskel would always sing his praises. I always really liked him. Dreyfuss mentioned in interviews he was always sneaking away to the tanning bed, which eventually killed him. I get pissed every time I hear (or read) Friedkin say he wish he'd gotten McQueen for Sorcerer, I like Scheider much more. I didn't care for Last Embrace though...

Stephen J Cannell lobbied for him to do a cop show in his later years, but Scheider said he'd played enough cops...

I'm glad Steve McQueen (and later Robert Mitchum) turned down the lead in Sorcerer. IMO, Schneider was perfect for it.

I think I read on IMDB (not sure how true) that Scheider knew they wouldn't ask him to be in Jaws 3 (he did Jaws 2 to get out of a contract) but he wanted to be sure. So, he signed on for Blue Thunder so he would be contractually unavailable for Jaws 3.

I thought he was great in 2010, and the best part of SeaQuest DSV.

Also check him out in a cold war movie called "The Fourth War"

This, 1000 x this. Scheider was such a bad ass. And one of my favorite actors from the 70's. He's the only reason to see "Jaws 2". It's a terrible film. But damn it, he somehow made it watchable. Even though is was a smaller part, he was amazing in "Marathon Man". And "52 Pick-Up" is such an underrated performance. And movie!

He brought a great humanity and scientific curiosity to season 1 of SeaQuest DSV as Capt. Bridger. I'm sure he must've rankled at having to perform in the Baywatch-esque turn it took in Season 2, which is probably why he didn't return for season 3.

Edit: lol, I must've subconsciously remembered some of his interviews from that time. He lambasted the second season, before it even premiered:

You should call the AMA, because they have no idea what causes multiple myeloma (a cancer of blood plasma), which is what killed Scheider. I think you may be confusing myeloma with melanoma.
