Andre Holland is in negotiations to join Viola Davis in the New Regency’s heist thriller “Widows,” directed by Steve McQueen.
Cynthia Erivo, known for Broadway’s “The Color Purple” revival, is also on board.
“Gone Girl” screenwriter and novelist Gillian Flynn will write the script with McQueen.
Based on the 1983 British miniseries about a caper gone wrong, the story follows four armed robbers who are killed in a failed heist attempt, leaving their widows to finish the job.
The film will be produced by McQueen, and Iain Canning and Emile Sherman of See-Saw Films, who teamed with McQueen on “Shame” and also produced the best picture Oscar-winner “The King’s Speech.” Film4 is co-financing with New Regency.
The movie marks McQueen’s first feature since winning the best picture Academy Award for “12 Years a Slave” in 2014.
Besides ending his run on Cinemax’s “The Knick,” Holland had himself a banner year with a critically acclaimed roll in the award season darling “Moonlight” and a juicy role in “American Horror Story: Roanoke.” He also recently finished shooting Disney’s “A Wrinkle in Time” adaptation.
He is repped by CAA.

After the three excellent films he's given us, I'm game for anything McQueen does. I hope he finds a way to get Michael Fassbender in there, even if it's a small role.

Hunger and Shame were great. I didn't think much of 12 Years a Slave. However he still ranks "see anything he does" for me.

Robert Duvall has rounded out the cast of Steve McQueen’s thriller “Widows,” starring Viola Davis.
Duvall joins an impressive ensemble cast, including Colin Farrell, Liam Neeson, Andre Holland, Elizabeth Debicki, Cynthia Erivo, Michelle Rodriguez, and Daniel Kaluuya.
McQueen is co-writing the script with Gillian Flynn, and producing the project with See-Saw Films’ Iain Canning and Emile Sherman. New Regency, 20th Century Fox, and Film4 are co-financing the movie, which Fox will distribute.
The film is based on the British miniseries of the same name, which was penned by BAFTA award-winning writer Lynda La Plante (“Prime Suspect”). The pic opens with four armed thieves being killed during a robbery. Their surviving widows come together to try to finish the failed job.
Duvall will play Farrell’s father who may help the widows complete the gig. Production is expected to start this summer, although a release date hasn’t been set yet.
The legendary actor continues to stay busy, most recently appearing in James Franco’s “In Dubious Battle” and starring opposite Robert Downey Jr. in “The Judge.” He was also recently seen in “Wild Horses.”
He is repped by UTA.

for a movie called Widows about female widows, the title with starring actors seems a little, well, testosteroney...

I don't know what to think about the trailer...
Am I being preached at or is this a heist movie or what?

Hmm. I still think it looks good, but that trailer makes it look like a more generic crime thriller drama (which isn't exactly McQueen's style) whereas I felt the first trailer gave it a more unique vibe. I'm still in.

Being McQueen its probably like the Drive trailer situation, to drum up a wider audience.

That looked pretty cool. Viola Davis is good and it has a few decent supporting actors.

If this film is typical McQueen and you go by that trailer, you're going to be disappointed.

Misleading trailers? Thats fine by me. Whatever keeps getting McQueen funded with final cut.
