The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018, D: The Coen Brothers) -- Netflix

Joel and Ethan Coen are the latest auteurs moving into television, with a new event anthology set in the Old West.

Annapurna Television is partnering with the Coen brothers on a limited series Western called “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.” Sources tell Variety that Annapurna intends to pursue an innovative approach that could combine television and theatrical.

Joel and Ethan Coen wrote the script from an original idea and will direct the project.

The Coens will produce “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” through their Mike Zoss Productions label. Megan Ellison and Annapurna Television’s president of television, Sue Naegle, will serve as executive producers.

“We are very excited to be working with Megan and Sue on this project,” the Coen brothers said in a statement to Variety.

It’s still unclear how theatrical distribution could play a part in the project, but the intent is to shoot “Buster Scruggs” as a miniseries. According to sources, the scope of the project seemed too challenging to be covered in one feature film.

The idea is similar to Imagine Entertainment’s adaptation of the “The Dark Tower” series. Imagine partners Brian Grazer and Ron Howard had planned to do something over both theatrical and television, but ended up sticking with one feature film, which Sony will release later this year.

Plot details of “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” are unknown, though it will intertwine six different story lines. The brothers are no strangers to the genre, with “True Grit” and “No Country for Old Men” on their resume.

The brothers join a list of elite directors who have crossed over to television to further develop stories that could not make it to the big screen. Among many others, David O. Russell is currently working on a series for Amazon starring Julianne Moore and Robert De Niro, and J.J. Abrams is writing and directing a limited series with Meryl Streep that is currently being shopped.

The Coens most recently wrote and directed “Hail, Caesar!” and also penned the script for George Clooney’s next directorial effort, “Suburbicon.” They are repped by UTA.

After making a mark in the film industry, Annapurna is now making strides in television and is in pre-production on a limited series adaptation of the novel “Today Will Be Different” by Maria Semple, with Julia Roberts attached to star.

re: The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018, D: The Coen Brothers) -- Netflix

You might have forgotten, but at the beginning of the year, right in the thick of awards season talk and with Sundance on the horizon, it was revealed that the Coen Brothers were making the move to TV, writing and directing “The Ballad Of Buster Scruggs,” with Annapurna‘s TV shingle shepherding the project. Nothing has been heard about it since, but it looks like we’re about to find out a lot more.

An eagle eyed reader alerted us to casting notices for the series, which not only reveal that shooting will begin next month in Albuquerque, New Mexico but also provide a brief logline for what this show will be all about:

The stories of six individuals weave together in the old West at the end of the Civil War.

Additionally, ‘Scruggs’ is described as a drama/comedy which sounds about right for the Coens, and we’re pretty excited to see the pair return to the western genre, after showing such a great hand with it in “True Grit.”

No word yet on who the lead actors will be, but if filming begins soon, I’d imagine we’re going to hear a lot about this one soon. There’s also no mention of where the series might land, but there’s no doubt every streaming service and network in town are going to throw their hat in the ring for this one.

It’s official.

The Coen Brothers are back in the Land of Enchantment.

The New Mexico Film Office confirmed on Wednesday that the feature-length series of Westerns, “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs,” will film largely in the Santa Fe area.

The production is produced by Annapurna Pictures and the Oscar-winning Coen Brothers are directing.

“To have filmmakers with the distinction of the Coen Brothers return for a third time is a testament to the quality of our crews, our support services, our infrastructure, our communities and our significant work to let filmmakers know they’re welcome in New Mexico,” said Nick Maniatis, New Mexico Film Office director.

“The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” is a feature-length omnibus consisting of six separate stories, all Westerns.

The first of the six is about a singing cowboy and is the title story.

The second, “Near Algodones,” is about a high-plains drifter whose own fecklessness dogs his attempts at bank robbery and cattle driving.

The third, “Meal Ticket,” follows an actor and impresario of a traveling show.

The fourth, “All Gold Canyon,” is about a prospector who happily finds a gold seam but then unhappily finds an evil encroacher.

The fifth, “The Gal Who Got Rattled,” follows two trail bosses on the Oregon Trail and a woman on the wagon train who needs the help of one of them and who might be a marriage prospect for the other.

Lastly, “The Mortal Remains,” about the five very different passengers on a stagecoach of mysterious destination.

According the film office, principal photography will take place mid-July through the end of September.

The production will employ approximately 188 New Mexico crew members, 16 New Mexico actors and 800 New Mexico background talent, the film office said in a release.

The Coen Brothers return to New Mexico after filming the films, “True Grit” and “No Country for Old Men.”

If the Coen Brothers decided to make a movie of Frances McDormand reading the newspaper, not only would I watch it, it would probably be awesome. I have not disliked a single movie they have made, and they have made several truly truly exceptional movies especially Fargo, NCFOM and the almost forgotten Blood Simple, along with the sheer awesomeness of TBL, Raising Arizona and many others,

Needless to say I am all in.

Fantastic news. Loved their adaptation of True Grit. Not everything they've done is classic, but they're always interesting.

I'm familiar with the Jack London story "All Gold Canyon" but haven't Googled to see if the other stories are pre-existing or if any were originals written exclusively for the series. I suspect the former.

Have to wonder if the title is actually going to be the title of the series, though. It would seem odd to name an anthology series after one story, especially since that title has a comedic ring to it. I'm sure that the Coens will manage to find some humor even in the darker plots, but it using that title for the series will perhaps give a misleading impression.

[Edit: Read the OP and had most of the questions above answered. At least some will be original (title story, for instance), and the stories will be intertwined with overlapping characters. Need to read the OP thoroughly next time.]

Tim Blake Nelson, James Franco, Zoe Kazan, Tyne Daly, Stephen Root and Ralph Ineson are nearing deals to star in the Coen brothers’ ambitious TV project THE BALLAD OF BUSTER SCRUGGS, the Tracking Board has exclusively learned.

Annapurna Television is backing the omnibus series, which will be comprised of six segments, each featuring different characters.

As first reported by the Albuquerque Journal, the segments are as follows:

“The Ballad Of Buster Scruggs” follows a singing cowboy. The Tracking Board has learned that Tim Blake Nelson will play the title character.

“Near Algodones” is about a high-plains drifter whose own fecklessness dogs his attempts at bank robbery and cattle driving. We hear James Franco, Stephen Root (The Ladykillers) and Ralph Ineson (The Witch) will star in this one.

“Meal Ticket” follows an actor and impresario of a traveling show.

“All Gold Canyon” is about a prospector who happily finds a gold seam but then unhappily finds an evil encroacher.

“The Gal Who Got Rattled” follows two trail bosses on the Oregon Trail and a woman on the wagon train who needs the help of one of them and who might be a marriage prospect for the other. We hear Zoe Kazan (The Big Sick) will play the titular “gal.” Her publicist did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

“The Mortal Remains” follows five very different passengers on a stagecoach of mysterious destination. We hear Tyne Daly (Spider-Man: Homecoming) will star in this one.

Buster Scruggs is slated to start production later this month in New Mexico and run through the end of September. The Coens previously filmed No Country for Old Men and True Grit in New Mexico.

Tim Blake Nelson, who previously worked with the Coens on O Brother, Where Art Thou, is represented by UTA, Gateway Management Company and attorney Steve Breimer.

The Coen Brothers are headed to Netflix.

The streaming giant has picked up the pair's television series The Ballad of Buster Scruggs. Produced by Annapurna Television, the series will be written and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen.

The Western anthology will feature six tales about the American frontier. Each chapter will feature a distinct story about the American West. The project will star Tim Blake Nelson as Buster.

Annapurna's Megan Ellison and Sue Naegle will serve as executive producers, along with longtime Coen Brothers collaborator Robert Graf and the Coens themselves. The Ballad of Buster Scruggs is slated to premiere in 2018.

“We are streaming motherf—ers!,” said the Coen Brothers. Added Netflix's vice president of original content Cindy Holland: “The Coens are visionary directors, masterful storytellers, and colorful linguists. We are thrilled for Netflix to become home to the full range of their talents.”

If you're talking about the show... they had nothing to do with it.

Yeah, it would be like crediting Robert Altman for the MASH TV series.

they EP'd every ep. (which i know can mean nothing to do or add) i wouldn't say nothing. plus, they did write the movie which it's inspired from. just cause they don't run it or direct it, doesn't mean they had nothing to do with it. wouldn't even exist without them...

The EP credit is out of respect. They have no involvement in the show at all. It is all Noah Hawley.

This has now been turned into a movie.

Oscar-winning directors Joel and Ethan Coen will be riding into the Oscar season this fall with a new film that began life as an anthology series.

Last year, “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” was announced as a Netflix original series that would feature six tales about the American frontier. The project has since morphed into a feature film, though one maintaining a chaptered anthology structure. It’s set for a world premiere in competition at the Venice Film Festival, which has really taken off in recent years as the annual awards season starting gun, before releasing later this year.

“We’ve always loved anthology movies, especially those films made in Italy in the Sixties which set side-by-side the work of different directors on a common theme,” the Coens said in a statement. “Having written an anthology of Western stories we attempted to do the same, hoping to enlist the best directors working today. It was our great fortune that they both agreed to participate.”

Classic.

Tim Blake Nelson (pictured) stars as the eponymous Scruggs. The cast features names like Zoe Kazan, Liam Neeson and Tom Waits, but little is known about the separate stories. Cinematographer Bruno Delbonnel (“Inside Llewyn Davis,” “Darkest Hour”) shot the film with the Arri Alexa camera, making “Buster Scruggs” the Coens’ first-ever digital photography production.

The film is expected to hit Netflix’s streaming service by year’s end along with the requisite theatrical release to qualify for Oscar consideration. The Coens tapped their usual artisan department heads on the picture, including production designer Jess Gonchor, costume designer Mary Zophres and composer Carter Burwell, all former Academy Award nominees.

“Buster Scruggs” joins the fast-developing year-end glut of prestige productions taking aim at the awards circuit. The festival circuit has been roaring to life with anticipated highlights, such as Damien Chazelle’s “First Man,” tapped as the Venice opening night selection.

Toronto is set to feature a number of world premieres, including Steve McQueen’s “Widows” and Barry Jenkins’ “If Beale Street Could Talk,” while Telluride is expected to play host to the debuts of Jason Reitman’s “The Front Runner” and David Lowery’s “Old Man & the Gun,” among others.

The Coens’ latest also joins Alfonso Cuarón’s black-and-white, semi-autobiographical drama “Roma”; Paul Greengrass'”22 July,” an account of the 2011 Norway terrorist attacks; and assuming it qualifies, Orson Welles’ finally-completed “The Other Side of the Wind” in what looks to be Netflix’s most promising lineup of Oscar hopefuls to date. All are set for Venice bows.

Joel and Ethan Coen have each been nominated for 14 Academy Awards. They collectively won the original screenplay Oscar for 1996’s “Fargo” and the best picture, director and adapted screenplay prizes for 2007’s “No Country for Old Men.”

Six episode series is now a film? It was probably six 55 minute episodes. Now it will be one film, probably 3 hours max. I feel like maybe we’re getting shortchanged.

The series itself (not episodes) was described as "feature length" so it is possible that each episode ranged from 25-30 minutes for a total of 3 hours. Unless the info isn't accurate.
