Are you thinking of Wild Tales? (The Argentinian movie), I remember a slow car story in that.

I loved this! I would disagree with those that say the final segment didn’t tie it all together.

Spoiler:

Every segment was about death and had one of the main characters dying. I need to listen to the stagecoach speech again to see if parts of it point back to each tale, but death is the only thing we ALL have in common. No, it didn’t tie the events all together, but it emphasized the theme of the whole anthology.

And an odd take on “All Gold Canyon” ...

Spoiler:
What if he did die in the pocket? What we see after is his “moving on“ ... it is the only “happy” ending, but really it ends with him disappearing into the woods. Much of it plays as a man preparing for and accepting his death.

Yeah the final episode was well written and I took it as the death of the West. All these people are gone. The trapper, the temperance woman, bounty hunters, card hustlers, etc. It’s the death of the old west. It’s the death of genre staples.

I appreciate this perspective.

Just finished watching this. Amazing. Loved every story except The Mortal Remains. I had to google an explanation to figure out what I just watched.

I could watch a full movie of Buster Scruggs creatively disposing of his foes.

I finally watched this, and I loved it. I'm a big Coen brothers fan though, so that didn't surprise me. The shift in tone from chapter to chapter did surprise me, but once I realized that they were not connected stories that no longer bothered me. If I ranked the chapters, it would be:

1. Buster Scruggs
2. Gal Who Got Rattled
3. All Gold Canyon
4. Near Algodones
5. Meal Ticket
6. Mortal Remains

The rankings of 3/4/5 are all pretty close for me. I'd say 1 and 2 are my clear favorites, and 6 by far my least favorite. I enjoyed the Hateful Eight/Tarantino style to Mortal Remains, but the end did not really pay off for me.

Yup, this was my favorite movie of 2018 (of those I've seen, anyhow). It should have gotten more Oscar love, but someone had to make room for the cinematic brilliance of Bohemian Rhapsody and Black Panther.

Well this was a fun movie but hardly brilliant on any level.

I don't think Bohemian Rhapsody or Black Panther are best picture material, but they are masterpieces compared to this steaming pile of shit.

Now that my friends, is a hot take.

Care to back that up with an example?

This film is worth watching for several excellent performances, especially from Tom Waites. The Girl Who Got Rattled segment alone makes this essential viewing. Powerful and thought provoking.

Re: The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018, D: The Coen Brothers) -- Netflix

Now a days the line between Movies and TV is blurred. I wish I could explain why shows like Deadwood, or Mad Men, or Game of Thrones, while amazing, are still Television, and different (not necessarily lesser than, but DIFFERENT) from movies. Shamefully, I have to fall back on the old description of pornography: "I can't describe it, but I know it when I see it."

I really enjoy Buster Scruggs. Yet having watched it twice, it doesn't feel "cinematic" to me, the same way Black Panther or Bohemian Rhapsody do. It's missing that special thing that separates Movies from TV shows. I was surprised it got any AA nods, though the fact it got a screenplay award makes sense, since that is the category that has a history of selecting interesting/dark horse nominations (like Ghost World, or Borat).

You might argue I found Buster Scruggs to be TV because I saw it on Netflix instead of in a theatre, but the Coen's second last movie, Llwellen Davis I didn't see in a theatre, but saw on Netflix, yet that movie feels hugely cinematic. There is miles of difference between Buster Scruggs and LD, and I remain frustrated that I can't describe that difference, but only know it when I see it.

Re: The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018, D: The Coen Brothers) -- Netflix

I finally saw this movie earlier this week and it's really stuck with me. I missed it all before somehow, even that it's a Coen Brothers film. Everything ends up with a tragic ending, which I found a fascinating, creative choice. Even the gold rush segment, I mean, how long will that happiness last with that shot and his age? The last segment took me a bit to figure out, I admit. Each segment kept my interest. I hope to watch it again later this month, I really liked it.
