You can’t see the difference between a Netflix original like Buster Scruggs and a crisply shot modern film like Infinity Wars?

I’m sure someone here can chime in and explain it.

Not really. Because Netflix distributing doesn't have anything to do with how a movie looks.

The 4K HDR on this looked great.

That must be what he is referring to.

NF has a lot of 4K HDR series/movies right now with more on the way.

Check out their Marco Polo series for some very cool, eye-popping HDR.

^ not all Netflix original films have HDR. Apostle is 4K UHD which doesn't have the enhancement.

I can't be the only one who hated chapter 3 right?

I liked the Liam Neeson one a lot. Crushing ending, though.

I had a chance to watch this a couple more times. It's pretty great. Each tale is brisk and independent of each other. The first one has a lot of energy. Wouldn't have minded another one like that.

Love watching Tom Waits in anything.

I really liked it, but the thought The Gal That Got Rattled went on way, way too long. I think it was more than 30 minutes.

My rankings:

1. Near Algodones - Short, concise, funny, beautiful cinematography.

2. All Gold Canyon - Beautiful scenery, great subtle performance from Tom Waits.

3. The Ballad of Buster Scruggs - Like a live-action, R-rated Looney Tunes cartoon! It took me a minute to get into but once I realized what they were going for, I loved it.

4. The Girl Who Got Rattled - Probably the most “complete” story with a gut punch ending.

5. Mortal Remains - I actually enjoyed the supernatural aspect to this one but it felt just a little too reminiscent of The Hateful Eight with the stagecoach setting/conversation.

6. Meal Ticket - Didn’t care for this one at all.

Watched this last night and thought it was fantastic! Some of them really caught me off guard but Meal Ticket. I knew exactly what was going to happen there.

This was the only story that left me unsatisfied (all the more bummer it was the final one). I think I get what was supposed to be going on, but was mostly confused. It seemed more like the opening twenty minutes of a full length movie than a stand-alone short film.

Everything else I really enjoyed.

Agreed.
I thought its point wasn't a worthy conclusion to the film.

I kind of wonder why they didn’t bookend the film with Buster Scruggs shorts. Maybe have the first segment end with Buster Scruggs winning the first duel and have the final segment end with him losing the second duel.

This was very good. The Girl Who got Rattled was excellent. It’s worth seeing just for that segment, but many of the segments are good to great.

Question: Is that really how panning for gold works or is that all made up?

I was not impressed with this. Part of the problem is that it set a "tone" with the title and first segment, and then subsequently abandoned that tone.

Re: The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018, D: The Coen Brothers) -- Netflix

Each episode had its own tone. That’s for sure. I think this would have been better as 6 episodes of a small series, since there’s no overlap of characters and each episode is so different. That’s how it was originally conceived, I believe.

Everyone involved says the TV show approach was never true and falsely reported.

It did feel like it was originally conceived as a different format though. I enjoyed the movie but it definitely felt like it was missing something. I don’t know what but something felt off about the story structure.

The Coens have said that each piece was written separately over the years. They put each away because they didn't know what to do with them and didn't seem interested in making shorts. They eventually came up with an anthology movie once they had multiple stories.

Even if the TV mini aspect is not true, each one could have made a great 45 minute episode.

Re: The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018, D: The Coen Brothers) -- Netflix

Excited to watch this! Two questions:

1) What is the recentish (might around 5 years old) film that is also basically a collection of short stories? One of the short stories has a character express road rage at a slow driver. Character's car breaks down by a bridge, slow driver comes by and creates havoc!

2) Any other suggestions for movies like these? (Gritty, loosely connected short stories.)
