Can I just say that those curious about this movie should definitely check it out on the big screen. I caught it last month, and from the opening credits on, it became apparent that this is made for theatrical viewing, not home viewing. Check out my review: https://indieethos.com/2016/12/24/lion/

This is my favourite movie of 2016 of the ones I have seen.

Re: Lion (2016, D: Davis) S: Dev Patel, Rooney Mara, Nicole Kidman

I thought this was very good.

I do think that the first 45 minutes or so could've been trimmed to move at a better pace. Some of the Calcutta stuff was a bit repetitive. The film didn't really kick in for me until it shifts to Australia. I would've much prefered if they delved a little more into the Australian family dynamic.

This is by far the best work from Dev Patel. Very good performance. I wish Mara was utilized more.

I loved the reveal behind the meaning of the title.

I loved this one - didn't expect it but snuck up on me emotionally. Great performances across the board and is uplifting and heartbreaking all at once. I thought the main kid was fantastic in the early sequences and while I was surprised how much of the film took place in "the past", I thought it was fascinating. I'm not a big movie cryer but this year has seen me shed more tears in a cinema than I probably have in my entire life (Lion, Arrival, Manchester By The Sea, A Monster Calls).

Same boat here. Rarely get emotional at the movies but this one had me on the verge multiple times.

Caught this yesterday. Agree with everyone else on this board. I really feel that if he gets the right kind of roles, Dev Patel could become another Omar Shariff type actor. I also think it's interesting that he's only up for Supporting Actor, as he plays the main character. Then again, he doesn't really show up until halfway through the movie so maybe that's what did it.

Q:
Spoiler:
Are we to assume that Gudu died trying to find Saroo around the train tracks, or that he was hit by the train first and that is why he never returned? Saroo had images of Gudu searching for him, but that was probably in his head.

A:
Spoiler:
They never went into detail in the film but they found his body the next day on or near one of the tracks with his arms cut off. They assumed he was on his way back.

You've never ever seen her in a movie before? Or this is literally the first time you saw one in a theatre?

A DVDTalker who hasn't seen David Fincher's Social Network or The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo? Am I in an alternate universe?

She is quite a diverse actress. She seems to alternate between immersive roles and the cool girlfriend character.

Re: Lion (2016, D: Davis) S: Dev Patel, Rooney Mara, Nicole Kidman

I thought this was really well done, with a few minor issues that prevent it from being great.

Both Patel and Pawar were excellent. That kid did a superb job.

Mara and the Matoosh character either needed expansion or deletion. I think Mara wasn't needed at all but there was an unexplored dynamic with Matoosh that would have been nice to see. More with the family unit in general would have been appreciated.

The film falls into a few cliche filmmaking bits (Saroo smashes his research board only to find just what he's looking for in a moment of frustration minutes later). This could've been a longer film to tell the required story but what was presented hit all the right notes. Some devastating facts in here, too. Some people lead a real shit life.

Loved this movie. I was shocked to read that 80,000 kids go missing in India each year. Unreal.
