I've argued about Streep before. She's a lauded actor, but she been in no great movies. Diane Keaton was in The Godfather and Annie Hall. Streep hasn't been in one film on the level of those. Her performances may be great but they're mostly in films that are simply good, not great.

I agree about Huppert, she's amazing in The Piano Teacher. I'm glad that she will be starring in Abel Ferrara's next film 'Siberia' along with Willem Dafoe and Nicolas Cage.

You said "living" not "working," so for actress, I'll propose Machiko Kyo, star of RASHOMON, UGETSU, GATE OF HELL, PRINCESS YANG KWEI FEI, STREET OF SHAME, FLOATING WEEDS and many other Japanese classics. She made one Hollywood film, THE TEAHOUSE OF THE AUGUST MOON with Glenn Ford and Marlon Brando, filmed in Japan. She's 92 now.
