I saw a Tweet calling out the actors for participating in this film.

Obviously they don't watch too many horror movies....

It's not like no one has ever walked out of a movie at Cannes.

For me LVT is one of the greatest living directors. I love the majority of his films and always look forward to anything by him. The only ones I’ve been disappointed by are The Boss of it All & Epidemic, and I have not seen The Idiots.

I was under the impression that that’s what Cannes was for.

You forget loud boos and forty minute applauses! 100 people is a 4% walk-out rate, that's disappointing.

There simply are no bigger pussies or entitled snobs than Cannes critics. Take everything out of the festival with a huge grain of sand. Every year a movie is so shocking it draws headlines. It's complete bullshit every time.

Actors culpable - what the fuck kind of thing is that to say?

I concur with you guys about Cannes.
"Critics" are a dime a dozen.
If I ONLY watched critically-approved films, I would hate movies.

Re: The House That Jack Built (D: Lars von Trier) S: Matt Dillon, Bruno Ganz

Lars von Trier’s serial killer drama “The House That Jack Built” has returned to stir up controversy all over again with the release of seven teaser posters featuring slightly graphic images of the movie’s main characters tied up with their bodies contorted. Anyone who took issue with the film’s depiction of violence towards women probably won’t be thrilled with Zentropa’s marketing, which is putting its female victims’ contorted bodies front and center.

“The House That Jack Built” is Von Trier’s first release since “Nymphomaniac.” Matt Dillon stars in the title role, a man who looks back on the four murders that proved instrumental in his development as a serial killer. Jack’s victims are played by Uma Thurman, Riley Keough, Siobhan Fallon Hogan, and Sofie Grabol. Dillon joins the four women, plus Von Trier and co-star Bruno Ganz, on Zentropa’s teaser posters. The images bring to mind the controversial “Nymphomaniac” posters that depicted the main characters having orgasms.

Von Trier premiered “The House That Jack Built” at the Cannes Film Festival, where it was met with a polarizing response due to its graphic violence against women, children, and animals. The movie caused dozens of walkouts at its first screening and left some critics praising von Trier’s vision and others condemning it as repulsive. Von Trier personally loved the response.

“[It] made me very relaxed,” von Trier told Cineurope at Cannes about the reaction. “It’s quite important not to be loved by everybody, because then you’ve failed. I’m not sure if they hated it enough, though. If it gets too popular, I’ll have a problem. But the reception seemed just about right.”

IFC Films has U.S. distribution rights to “The House That Jack Built” but has not announced an official release date. The film is opening November 29 in Denmark, hence the release of the new teaser posters below.

IFC Films is distributing the "Director's Cut" into theaters for one night only on November 28th, before unveiling a trimmed down, R-rated iteration into select theaters on December 14th. Both versions will be available for purchase on VOD December 14th.

Got my ticket for the director's cut. It's hard to say I'm "excited" because... yeah. But I'm... looking forward to the experience... I think?

Mutilation of women and animals seems like something I can comfortably never experience.

Re: The House That Jack Built (D: Lars von Trier) S: Matt Dillon, Bruno Ganz

I was wondering whether anybody here knows when is the earliest date anywhere this will be released on DVD. Currently, 4 March 2019 (in the U.K.) is the earliest I managed to find. Thanks!

I don't think there's an official release date, it goes to digital streaming in Mid-December, so I would assume Late-Feb or Early March in the US as well (on DVD).

Tonight's the night.
Cinema is sold out.
This should be... existentially dreadful.

I liked it.
Laughed at numerous inappropriate moments, and one, "Oh Jesus."

Surprised there were only 5 or 6 others at the showing.

Re: The House That Jack Built (D: Lars von Trier) S: Matt Dillon, Bruno Ganz

The Screening I attended was pretty close to selling out. One woman walked out.

Left the theater disappointed. Lots of hype for such a hollow film.

If the film had consistently kept the tone of the 2nd & 4th Incidents, it would have been quite a bit better.

A film like that isn't one that Lars von Trier would ever make though.

I get that...think it's safe to say LVT is not like most other folks.
I thought Melancholia was a masterpiece.
Some of his other stuff I can't stomach.

Re: The House That Jack Built (D: Lars von Trier) S: Matt Dillon, Bruno Ganz

Supposedly the difference in cuts is only about four minutes. I expect it simply amounts to tightening up the more violent bits of the film, which are actually pretty sparse as it is.

The hunting scene... and the follow-up... are probably cut the most. Less of the camera showing specific moments.
