Wonka (2023, D: Paul King) - S: Chalamet

‘Willy Wonka’ New Film in the Works From David Heyman and Warner Bros. (EXCLUSIVE)
Film Reporter Justin Kroll
OCTOBER 19, 2016 | 10:54AM PT

After helping build the “Harry Potter” franchise and rebooting it with “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” producer David Heyman and Warner Bros. are re-teaming to revive another classic character.

Sources tell Variety that Warner Bros. has acquired the rights to the “Willy Wonka” IP from the Roald Dahl Estate and is planning a new movie centered around the eccentric character.

Heyman will produce with Michael Siegel, who is the manager of the Dahl Estate. Kevin McCormick is exec producing. “The Secret Life of Pets” scribe Simon Rich is penning the script. Courtenay Valenti is overseeing the project for the studio.

Sources reveal that the film will not be an origin tale, but a standalone movie focused on Wonka and his early adventures. It’s unknown who from the original book series, other than Wonka, will be involved in the project. If the reboot is a hit, it seems likely that characters like Charlie could be seen in future installments of a possible franchise.

The studio has been trying to lock down rights from the Dahl Estate since the beginning of the year and finally closed a deal earlier this fall. Dahl penned two books in which Wonka appeared — the 1964 novel “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and the 1972 book “Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator” — but never wrote anything focused specifically on the Wonka character.

“Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” has since been adapted into two feature films, most recently by Warner Bros. in 2005 with Tim Burton directing and Johnny Depp starring as Wonka. The original Willy Wonka, Gene Wilder, died on Aug. 29.

Please no. Just stay away from this. You could have made a sequel with Gene and the boy who played Charlie based off the book but this is silly. We love it for Gene and the actors.

Only if it's an origins story and alludes that Wonka is a serial killer. And the candy factory is a front for an HH Holmes-like murder house.

Wonka and Slugworth partake in a highly erotic roadtrip in this prequel to Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

My guess is that it will center on his adventures when he acquired the help of the Oompah-Loompahs. I would be interested in seeing where they came from and under which dire circumstances they were in that they agreed to move to London and work in his factory.

Warner Bros. is in talks with Paul King, director of the two “Paddington” movies, to helm a reboot of “Willy Wonka,” based on Roald Dahl’s classic children’s book “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.”

ugh... I don't think Willy Wonka needs a third try. The first was classic. The second... super creepy. wtf are they gonna do this time?

the only way to do this would to be to have Peter Ostrum comes out of retirement to play himself as Charlie and hand the factory over to someone new with the same kind of contest as the original. But not a remake, a part 2. As he hasn't really acted since the original I doubt this would work as I cant imagine he has a fraction of Gene Wilder's carisma.

I've always liked Johnny Depp, but to date I haven't seen the remake and don't plan to.

I haven't seen the remake, but didn't that already include an origin story?

There was at least one bit with Wonka as a child, and his oppressive dentist father. I don't think it went further into him building his empire.

I realize this post is two years old but that would make for an awesome movie!

An origin story following Wonka’s brutal enslavement of the Oompa Loompas?

My guess is it will focus on an Oompha Loompah who runs for President.

Four months after hiring Paddington helmer Paul King to direct its new Willy Wonka movie, Warner Bros. has begun putting together a shortlist of stars for the titular role, and we hear it’s led by Ryan Gosling, Donald Glover and Ezra Miller.

The project hails from Harry Potter producer David Heyman and screenwriter Simon Rich (Man Seeking Woman), and it’s rumored to be a prequel that will explore Wonka’s origin story. How did he amass his fortune, and perhaps more importantly, how did he meet those Oompa Loompas?

Warner Bros. can’t really go wrong with any of these actors, so it may come down to whoever sparks to the script. The studio has a lot invested in Miller, who stars in WB’s Fantastic Beasts franchise (which is produced by Heyman) and plays The Flash in the DC movie universe. Do they trust him enough to give him another potential franchise?

The studio has coveted Gosling for years, working with him on Blade Runner 2049, Crazy, Stupid Love, The Nice Guys and Gangster Squad. Heck, they even picked up his super-arthouse directorial debut Lost River, just to be in business with the guy. Gosling will be riding high off First Man, which could put him back in the Oscar race this fall, and after that, his schedule is pretty clear. He could also stand to do a four-quadrant, family-friendly tentpole, as most of his films have been aimed at adult audiences.

Solo sensation Glover is the real wild card here. Yes, he’s incredibly busy between his hit FX series Atlanta and his burgeoning music career, but on the film side, all he has coming up is the voice of Simba in Disney’s live-action remake of The Lion King. We also hear that Glover has actively been chasing this role, and he’d certainly be a welcome change from Johnny Depp, who led Tim Burton‘s 2005 adaptation of the Roald Dahl novel.

Gene Wilder will always be the definitive Willy Wonka, but these three actors have the chance to put their own spin on the role, and we can’t wait to see who WB and King choose for the plum part.

Representatives for Warner Bros., Miller and Glover did not respond to requests for comment regarding this story, though that’s understandable, since it remains early in the casting process and Heyman is currently focused on producing Quentin Tarantino’s next film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Stay tuned…

Here’s hoping for Donald Glover. Then we can get an origin story that has to explain how Willy Wonka went from black to white.

Wouldn't that make it the Michael Jackson story?

There's precedent for color change in the Wonka factory

Did the book say anything about Wonka's race? I'm surprised that people aren't campaigning for Idris Elba as Wonka. Too old maybe?
