You probably don't want to delve too much into the original book's dealings with race. In the first edition of the book, the Oompa Loompas were a black pigmy tribe.

“In the version first published, [the Oompa-Loompas were] a tribe of 3,000 amiable black pygmies who have been imported by Mr. Willy Wonka from ‘the very deepest and darkest part of the African jungle where no white man had been before.’ Mr. Wonka keeps them in the factory, where they have replaced the sacked white workers. Wonka’s little slaves are delighted with their new circumstances, and particularly with their diet of chocolate. Before they lived on green caterpillars, beetles, eucalyptus leaves, ‘and the bark of the bong-bong tree.'”

Warner Bros will be releasing Wonka on March 17, 2023, a prequel to Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory which focuses on the candy architect Willy Wonka’s younger days before having his confection empire.

The movie has been in development for roughly four years. David Heyman was always attached as producer, and Paddington director Paul King is helming. It’s early days for this project and it won’t be shooting while UK is in lockdown. No casting yet.

Wonka without the chocolate factory? Sounds captivating!

Is this going to be 2 hours of Wonka tracking and enslaving the Oompa Loompas? I look forward to the grisly montage of Oompa Loompa babies being ripped from their Oompa Loompa mothers’ arms. The songs they sing to that should be catchy!

So, expand the flashback scenes from the Burton version. I for one look forward to the CG Christopher Lee

I don't remember much of the book I guess, but it sounds like Burton's version adapted that (except the black pigmy part) pretty much on the nose.

Was the Great Glass Elevator that bad, or is it just impossible to be reworked into a movie? I remember reading it as a kid and liking it but I wasn't the brightest kid and my tastes were questionable.

If they haven't cast this thing yet, I think John Mulaney could be a great Wonka. Hopefully his rehab is going well.

I love Mulaney but I say give me Daniel Radcliffe as Willy Wonka!

I do like that suggestion of Radcliffe. It seems they are casting a bit younger than him though.

They’re apparently looking at Tom Holland and Timothee Chalamet.

Jeez, I know *I’m* getting old when Daniel Radcliffe is considered too old.

I thought I was aiming young when I mentioned Radcliffe.

I didn't. But if anyone can make this work, it's Paul King. Those "Paddington" films were wonderful. And I hope this will make me forget Burton's film. Woof!

Warner execs asking for a new project with a well-known IP that they already own. Same reason we got Venom and New Mutants.

So he's basically a strange man-child with Peter Pan syndrome and an unhealthy interest in children?

Maybe we'll get to see Wonka's early experiments in shrinking horses.

I too have always wondered why they don't just make The Great Glass Elevator. It's right there.

Great question. Maybe it's a rights issue. WB already owns the rights to the Wonka character.

Wonka as child predator/Oompa Loompa slaver seems more plausible.
