I actually think Jafar looks more miscast than the Genie. (Really everyone seems miscast though.)

Early reactions on Twitter seem to indicate it is better than the trailers and marketing material would lead us to believe. https://www.slashfilm.com/aladdin-early-reactions/

I am cautious, but will see it on Thursday night.

Friend of mine just saw it. While he couldn't talk about it, he did refer to someone's comment when he said he was going to see it. She had said "Good luck, you'll need it."

I have no idea what that means. It's bad? You might get lucky and it's good this time?

I took it as he didn't like it.

Sounds like it sticks too close to the original without giving it enough of its own personality to justify its existence. Lots of acclaim for its cast (minus the guy playing Jafar), decent amount of criticism handed to Richie. That said, doesn't sound like a trainwreck.

That seems par for the course on these live action remakes. But the trailers have looked so bad that being "not a trainwreck" probably exceeds the expectations of most of us.

A friend saw this and said it was entertaining. One of the better live action adaptations.

No surprise there. The live-action Beauty and the Beast was almost a word for word/song for song copy of the animated version and a huge hit. I'm sure the template is the same for both Aladdin and The Lion King.

If this bombs along with Dumbo earlier this year will it halt the momentum of turning Disney animated movies into live adaptations?

No, because Lion King is going to do killer business I think. But it could slow down the pace, which would be welcome as well.

Lion King will probably do well, but even with good or bad reviews with all of these, Disney won’t stop. I really wish they would. I think their Endgame is to release blu-rays and such that have both original animated versions along with their live action counterparts. All about the $$ that matters to them.

I said it before, but they can't stop until they do the epic live action Kingdom Hearts crossover movie.

Re: Disney's Aladdin (2019, D: Ritchie) S: Will Smith, Mena Massoud, Naomi Scott

Saw it last night - haven’t seen the original animated movie in ages, but it felt different enough to not be an exact remake (the flying carpet scene is almost deja vu though). Overall, liked the two leads (I think I am in love with Naomi Scott :P) and I liked Will Smith as the genie. It was his version of the character and wasn’t an imitation of Robin Williams, and it felt like it worked. I’ll echo that the Jafar guy was waaaay miscast - just not good when he was on screen. Liked Nasim Pedrad in it. The new songs seem somewhat off stylistically and one of them bordered on terrible. The “Prince Ali” music set was rousing and put a smile on my face.

I was glad I saw it but not something I recommend people rush out to catch.

I never saw it, but they didn't change at least some of the plot to take it away from the Stockholm Syndrome-esque storyline? I figured that would seem really weird in live action, especially given how petite the lead is.

It made 7M from Thursday night previews. That's pretty good. Maybe the weekend box-office will now exceed the projected 75M (?) I still can't see where this movie will gross more than 200M though. I don't know a single person personally who wants to see it. And I don't care about the reviews, it looks terrible.
