That's actually my main problem with the original animated movie - it's just Robin Williams being Robin Williams. It's funny, but it's just his schtick (and pretty dated now too).

Just saw this during the Grammys. Genie!

It looks... eh. Still nothing particularly special.

It is strange that this comes out in 3.5 months and they haven’t really shown any footage to “sell” the movie yet.

He looks downright creepy. I just can’t believe Ritchie and Disney execs really think this is something kids are going to be receptive to.

Holy shit. When I saw the trailer I immediately thought it looks like a dark Guy Ritchie type remake or whatever, not knowing he is indeed the director until I saw thread title more clearly. This looks terrible and yeah, Will Smith looks fucking creepier than Pennywise...

Will Smith as a force ghost would've been fine imo...why the CG shirtless version? Seems like a lot more work...

Shirtless version? Seems pretty on the nose from the original.

I will never understand why audiences want to swallow these pallid CGI remixes of the far better original cartoons.

I get why the studios are making ‘em: $$$.

The long shots look great, the character close ups, wardrobe and design look like student productions.

Kids had no idea at the time about Williams when Aladdin came out in '92 and Mrs. Doubtfire was a year later. He didn't do much of his comedy in Hook and everything else at the time was rated R.

Smith tho, has been playing himself in pretty much everything outside of Oscar bait flicks, so kids are used to ID4. MiB, Shark Tale, WWW, FPoBA... and it looks to be more of the same.

Yeah, this isn’t looking good at all to me. They should have just made the Genie a mostly CG character voiced by Smith rather than it looking like he’s just painted blue.

I don’t even know if it’s possible, but I wonder what cost would have been to convert the original animation to 4K and HDR compared to the product budget for this.

Whatever it would've cost, there's not a lot of money to be made in that, especially as compared to these live action remakes.

I really think Disney is overkilling it with these live action adaptations of their classics. Three in a year too much if you ask me. Especially when this looks pretty bad and of the other two only look alright.

I knew enough about Robin Williams when Aladdin came out. Mork and Mindy reruns, Moscow on the Hudson, and Good Morning Vietnam were on TV once in a while. And of course Hook.
But for one thing, the Genie didn't look like Robin Williams, so that helped sell the illusion.
Another is that Robin Williams himself was known for doing a variety of voices, so that worked for the character of Genie.

Yup. Looking like some demon who took the form of Will Smith just to gain your trust, and then grants you three wishes that end with nightmarish Twilight Zone twists.
