Re: The Shunned: The Shining (1980) Oscar Poll

I like The Shining quite a bit but aside from maybe making a half-hearted argument that it should have at least been nominated for Best Art Direction, I don't see much of an issue with it not getting much awards recognition.

It's still a damn fine movie but not quiet the endless brilliance some people make it out to be.

I knew I had a reason to hate Redford...aside from THE ELECTRIC HORSEMAN, that is.

Hey now, the bolded film would be nominated for worst original King material, it's not based on a book.

Love the Shining but the greatest injustice was that Raging Bull lost to Ordinary People for Best Picture that year. Even critics named it the greatest movie of the 80s.

The real snubs I see are Fame winning for Score (over ESB) and Original Song (over Dolly or Willie).

Re: The Shunned: The Shining (1980) Oscar Poll

I'm in the minority but I never really cared for The Shining. I will clarify that by also saying that horror is one of my least favorite genres. We saw it in the theater and didn't think all that much of it. That "Here's Johnny" line that is so well regarded as a fine piece of improvisation I thought was stupid. The movie was trying to develop suspense and terror yet it broke the mood and make the theater laugh.

It certainly did have some nice set pieces and acting but I would never argue it Oscar worthy over Raging Bull and other great movies of the year.
