Disney's The Lion King (2019, D: Jon Favreau)

The Lion King is ready for the next stage of its Circle of Life — Disney announced on Wednesday that Jon Favreau is directing “a new reimagining” of the 1994 animated classic.

In its statement, Disney compared it to other recent projects like Maleficient, Cinderella, and next year’s The Beauty and the Beast. The main difference from those other films, of course, is that The Lion King has no human characters, so the live-action portion will probably be minimal.

Favreau is just coming off a live-action version of The Jungle Book, which debuted earlier this year to smashing box office earnings and critical raves (EW’s Chris Nashawaty and Leah Greenblatt called it one of the best films of 2016 so far) and already has a sequel in the works. Like The Jungle Book and The Beauty and the Beast, this new The Lion King will include songs from the original.

Details are still scarce, and no release date has been announced this new The Lion King, but Favreau is definitely on-board.

wtf?

Never liked the cartoon flick. It was good but not for me. I did like Jeremy Irons in it though. Kid Solid Snake was a fan of his at that age for some reason.

Yeah this will be weird since as what is said above there is no human characters, you might as well call it a CGI remake. Haven't seen any of these live action remakes of cartoons, will wait and see with the trailer.

While I'm excited for this because of what they were able to accomplish with Jungle Book, it just means he won't be doing any Star Wars films in the near future.

So, I'm waiting for an animated remake of a live-action remake of an animated movie :D

well, i loved the animated. it's a classic and ranks up there as one of my top films of all time. saw the Broadway production 3x as well. will give this a chance based on Favreau and his mastery of TJB, but not so sure this could really work...

Maybe they'll throw in some big game hunters or something just so they can call it live action ;)

I couldn't stand the remake of the Incredible Journey (big fan of the original, narrated version), but as excellent in all respects as I think the Jungle Book is, I can't say it's made me rethink my opinion on live action, talking animal flicks. I think they're just silly.

Maybe it was easy to buy into because Mowgli is an identifiable character and he speaks their language.

That said, I am looking forward to the Lion King. Favreau and crew did a great job with TJB. If Disney keeps hitting home runs with these remakes of animated classics maybe they'll do Snow White, Pinnochio, Sleeping Beauty, and eventually Bambi.

And maybe... Fantasia.

All things considered, Disney is probably already looking at everything they've got. -ohbfrank-

I was impressed with Favreau's take on The Jungle Book. Looking forward to this.

Will this be a musical? Any chance the just use the existing audio (songs and character voices) from the orignal movie and just create realistic looking CGI animals to go along with it?

Why? As Kal-El mentioned, there are other movies they should be working on.

I personally want to see The Black Cauldron revamped.

Sounds good to me, Jungle Book was surprisingly good.

All the Prydain books would make interesting films, but I can't see it happening at the Mouse House. They couldn't even follow through with completing the Narnia series.

As for a CG version of The Lion King, it seems pointless to me... but it's a license to print money. I prefer the trend of live-action remakes over all those garbage DTV sequels the studio used to churn out.

What a weird ass question.

Why? It seems perfectly logical to me. People love the original voices and songs. Why wouldn't they just reuse the audio track and save a ton of money?

Never in a million years would they ever do that. It's even more weird that you consider that "perfectly logical".

They've decided to go with actors in lion makeup:

Not sure how to feel about this. Most of the other live action Disney adaptations I've been okay with because I wasn't the hugest fan but The Lion King is one of the Disney classics I grew up with. Plus the fact that it's all CG animals is a bit weird. I know The Jungle Book only had the one actor but it still feels a bit different. I'm sure I'll see this though as I generally like Disney.

Because singing and dancing warthogs and meerkats will be incredibly realistic-looking?

Tell me who they will cast instead of James Earl Jones and Jeremy Irons...or even Nathan Lane.

Michael Keaton

I'm pretty sure that Jon Faverau would not be directing this if they were just taking the audio from the original movie and re-animating it.

They are using real animals and allowing them to act in their natural voices. No dubbing.
