The Lion King trailer suggests it is a shot-for-shot remake. True?

The Lion King is a revered and beloved movie, so you'd better revere and love those parts that the audience wants. But there are things in the movie that are going to be new. [And] it is a new form of filmmaking. Historical definitions don't work. It uses some techniques that would traditionally be called animation, and other techniques that would traditionally be called live action. It is an evolution of the technology Jon used in Jungle Book.

Was there a legitimate reason they didn't bring back Jeremy Irons to voice Scar?

Because they apparently decided that they wanted all the lions in this version to be voiced by people of African descent.

Well, all the actors playing lions are black so that may have something to do with it.

You know it can't be a shot for shot remake because they have to include all the new Nala songs that Beyonce will sing.

There are some completely new characters in this film, so no, it's not a shot for shot remake.

I'm not familiar enough with Billy Eichner. I would have guessed that was Jim Parsons as Timon.

As much as I’m dismayed, just doesn’t do it for me. Animated was perfect film. Just don’t see need for seemingly shot by shot remake. But hell, hope I’m wrong. I love Favreau and really enjoyed Jungle Book, but wasn’t as familiar as TLK...

I'm wondering if the three Hyennas will be voiced. I wish "Mentally Challenged" Ed would be included in this new version but I doubt PC Disney would allow it.

Shenzi, Azizi (replacing Banzai from the original movie), and Kamari (replacing Ed) will be voiced by Florence Kasumba, Eric Andre, and Keegan-Michael Key, respectively

That does absolutely nothing for me. Yet I'm convinced this will be a huge hit. So many people I talk to are so excited for this movie and I have no idea why.

The more I see footage of these remakes, the more I grow closer to the animated versions. These live versions are adding absolutely nothing to the experience the originals gave.

This one looks cool to me, but the mouths look off when they talk.

I’ll probably end up renting this version like I did with Beauty and the Beast and The Jungle Book but every trailer or tv spot I see for this, especially when the songs are used, makes me not want to watch this version but pop in the animated version instead.

I think the problem is that none of these add anything special to whatever world they are a part of. Instead they just come across as mediocre remakes instead of standing on their own.

And yeah, I want to see it but I already know Scar isn't going to live up to Irons' performance. Poor decision not getting him back with James Earl Jones. So that's already one knock against it.

Re: Disney's The Lion King (2019, D: Jon Favreau)

I still think a lot of the issue with these live action adaptations is how many of them they’re doing. Three in the course of a year (and actually more like three in roughly six months) is excessive. Really no reason why Disney had to go into such overkill mode with them this year in my opinion. They’re going to milk these dry until people either don’t care anymore or they’ll do well enough and be hits, but won’t exactly be talked about or generate a lot of hype (see Aladdin).

I already don't care, which is sad because I've loved the creativity of what they've offered from decades past. And now I can't think of anything original that's animated that I've loved recently (past 10-15 years or so). Pretty much all of their live movies have been nothing but sub-standard remakes. Nothing original at all.

Re: Disney's The Lion King (2019, D: Jon Favreau)

LK is my favorite entity of all time. Movie, broadway, soundtracks, everything. One of only 2-3 movies I’ve seen twice in theaters. One of two broadway shows I’ve seen multiple times (3). It’s a powerful experience for me. I cried in movie and theater. Not going to lie. And I just have no interests in what looks like a shot for shot remake in live-action, even though I love and have total faith in Favreau. I’ll see this when streaming, but not in theater, unless it gets superb reviews and I can see it for free, which I actually can with $50 gc. But won’t go it of way for this incarnation. I’m sorry.

I don't know why some are calling this a LIVE ACTION version... there isn't a living thing in it.

Re: Disney's The Lion King (2019, D: Jon Favreau)

The 1994 original was substantially reanimated for a 2002 imax release. Since that time the original version has not been available. Now they’ve created a duplicate animated version with cgi. Hey Disney, how about releasing the original film? It’s been as poorly treated as the 1977 Star Wars.

^^^I thought the only thing different added to the animated movie was the song "Morning Report"?
