Re: Weekend BO 9/23 - 9/25: A Magnificent weekend

This is the first time in years that I've seen the #1 film on opening day. It took a western remake to draw me out.

Per Box Office Guru:
The new shoot-em-up period film played to a 56% male crowd while 67% were 25 and older according to studio data from Sony.
The audience I was with was probably 90% male (mostly white) and over 50 (mostly WELL over 50), although not a large crowd. (One or two of the retirees brought their wives.) But then I go during the day.

How do they come up with those counts? I never see anybody at theaters counting or checking age/gender during opening weekend (or ever!).

Yep. Both Suicide Squad and Don't Breath had nice drops, the latter up to $120M WW on a reported $9.9M budget. Meanwhile, Squad is up to $731M WW.

I'm sure there's some sort of sample size used, along with a certain equation that comes up with the estimate. I know my answer is vague, but in short, statistics are being used. I've never seen anyone doing counts/questions either, but that doesn't mean it's not done at a lot of theaters.

Two way mirrors. They count the patrons through two way mirrors.

Age/gender testing is done by DNA from hair follicles left behind on the seats. Also saliva from straws left behind. The few people left with manners who actually throw their cups in the garbage on the way out have a tendency to skew the results.
