Re: Movies in which the unexpected actor became the bigger star
If that's our criteria, how about Blame It On Rio, which was supposed to launch Michelle Johnson as a sex symbol. Unfortunately, she couldn't act her way out of a paper bag. The unknown actress who played her best friend mostly got to keep her clothes on and ended up being a huge movie star eventually.

Kevin Spacey's role in The Usual Suspects was written specifically for him, so if anyone was expected to "breakout" from that film, it was him.

Superbad was marketed as a Seth Rogen-penned vehicle for Michael Cera, but his co-star Jonah Hill was the immediate break-out star and Hill's love interest Emma Stone went from unknown to most-wanted actress after her work there.

Now that's an excellent example of the concept, as Johah Hill's stardom (shudder) can be directly traced to Superbad. I think Emma Stone had to do a little more (Easy A, most likely) before she became the "it" girl she is today.

She's the go-to gal when you need to cast a Pacific-Islander

Not a movie but DiCaprio is the only person from Growing Pains who still has a career and still prominent today.
Don Cheadle had a small role in Colors but Sean Penn is still a star but back in 1988 you would never had thought Cheadle would be a huge star in the 2000's.

I guarantee that if you could go back, you would find a lot of reviews predicting that Peter Scolari will be a huge star and that the other guy is just okay.

I know it;s not a movie but Bruce Lee in the Green hornet tv show totally kicked living crap out of Van Williams in terms of popularity and charisma
Bruce Lee went on to become a timeless pop culture icon
Van Williams went on to naff all (but is still alive)

Brendan Fraser became the biggest star from that movie though competing against Pauly Shore is not really an accomplishment though Sean Astin has had a solid career but he was never a huge star.

I immediately thought of Marisa Tomei in My Cousin Vinny....that was a vehicle for Joe Pesci and Ralph Macchio and she pretty much stole the show (and the Oscar! )
She wasn't well known up to that point, either. We can argue whether Marisa became a bigger star than those two guys...but she certainly has had a more consistent career in terms of staying relevant.

The Fast and the Furious was supposed to be, pardon the pun, a star vehicle for Paul Walker but Vin Diesel became the star.

Lucas had a triple threat of films that were suppose to make him a star. He was in The Hulk, Stealth, and Poseidon. He never made it. His consolation price? He got to bang Salma Hayek for a little bit.

On the cast-commentary for Not Another Teen Movie, the cast goes bonkers for Sam Huntington and predicts what a big star he’s about to become. And with him being cast as Jimmy Olsen in Superman Returns soon after, they appeared to be right. However, He just mostly does small TV work now.
Chris Evans was one of the commentators, btw.

And speaking of NATM,I’ve always wondered why Mia Kirshner never became a bigger star. I would have thought that between Not Another Teen Movie and Exotica she would have broken out big time.
